Shulammite

The Beloved in the Song of Solomon

Aussi appelé : Sulammit, Shulamite, Sulamitt

Le royaume uniMatriarchc. 960 BC

The Shulammite is the female protagonist in Solomon's Song of Songs, a beautiful young woman who is the object of the king's love and desire. She represents the ideal bride and has been interpreted both literally as Solomon's beloved and allegorically as a picture of the relationship between God and his people, or between Christ and the church.

The Shulammite's Longing for Her Beloved

The Shulammite expresses her deep longing and love for her beloved and asks him to kiss her. She describes his love as better than wine.

1The Song of Songs, which is Solomon's.
2Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—for your love is better than wine.
3The fragrance of your oils is sweet; your name is oil poured out—therefore the maidens love you.
4Take me with you—let us run! The king has brought me into his chambers. We will rejoice and be glad in you; we will praise your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.

The Shulammite Describes Herself

The Shulammite describes herself as dark but beautiful, sunburnt from working in the vineyards. She explains that her brothers put her in charge of watching over the vineyards.

5I am dark, and I am lovely, daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.
6Do not stare at me because I am dark, because the sun has gazed upon me. My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I have not kept.

Mutual Declaration of Love

The Shulammite and her beloved exchange declarations of love and praise each other's beauty. They rejoice in one another in a garden full of flowers and fragrance.

1I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew flower names are uncertain; the first may be a crocus or meadow flower, the second a lotus or lily.
2Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women.
3Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
4He brought me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love.
5Sustain me with raisin cakes, refresh me with apples, for I am faint with love.
6His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me.

The Shulammite Seeks Her Beloved at Night

The Shulammite tells how she sought her beloved in the city streets at night and finally found him. She holds on to him and will not let him go.

1On my bed through the nights I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but I did not find him.
2Let me rise now and go about the city, through the streets and the squares; let me seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but I did not find him.
3The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. "Have you seen him whom my soul loves?"
4Scarcely had I passed them when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him and would not let him go until I had brought him to my mother's house, to the room of her who conceived me.

The Beauty of the Shulammite Is Praised

The beloved gives a detailed description of the Shulammite's beauty from head to toe and declares that she is perfect and without flaw.

1How beautiful you are, my love, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down the slopes of Gilead.
2Your teeth are like a flock of newly shorn ewes coming up from the washing, each one bearing twins, and none of them bereaved.
3Your lips are like a scarlet thread, and your mouth is lovely. Your cheek behind your veil is like a slice of pomegranate.
4Your neck is like the tower of David, built in courses of stone;[^1] a thousand shields hang upon it, all the armor of warriors. [^1]: The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; it may refer to rows of stonework or to an armory.
5Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, grazing among the lilies.
6Until the day grows cool and the shadows flee, I will go to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense.
7You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.

The Shulammite's Declaration of Faithfulness

The Shulammite declares that love is as strong as death, and that many waters cannot quench love. This is the climax of the Song of Songs and a profound theological statement about the power of love.

6Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death, its passion as unyielding as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a flame of the LORD.
7Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers wash it away. If a man offered all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned.
