Theudas was a man who claimed to be someone great and gathered around four hundred followers. His movement was crushed when he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. He is mentioned by Gamaliel in Acts as an example of a failed movement without divine origin.

Theudas was killed, and all who had followed him were scattered, and the movement fell apart.

Gamaliel's speech to the Sanhedrin

The respected Pharisee Gamaliel used Theudas as an example in his speech to the High Council to warn against persecuting the apostles, arguing that movements not from God will collapse on their own.

Comparison with Judas the Galilean

Gamaliel mentioned Theudas along with Judas the Galilean as examples of failed rebellious movements, implicitly contrasting them with the emerging Christian movement.

The Apostles' Release

As a result of Gamaliel's wise advice, in which he used Theudas as an example among others, the apostles Peter and John were released instead of being put to death by the Sanhedrin.
