In Genesis 23:1 it is stated that Sarah lived for 127 years, and she is the only woman in the Bible whose exact age at death is given, which underscores her unique significance in salvation history. The number 127 also appears in the book of Esther, where King Ahasuerus ruled over 127 provinces from India to Cush (Esther 1:1), and the same number is repeated when Mordecai's letter was sent out to all these provinces (Esther 8:9). In rabbinic tradition this repetition is seen as more than a coincidence – it is directly linked to Sarah's spiritual legacy, where Esther as her descendant gained influence over as many provinces as Sarah had years of life. In Bereishit Rabbah 58:1, Sarah's 127 years are interpreted as a combination of 100, 20, and 7: at 100 she was as sinless as at 20, and at 20 she was as beautiful as at 7. The unusual phrasing in the original text – "one hundred years and twenty years and seven years" – forms the basis of this exposition. According to rabbinic tradition (Bereishit Rabbah 58:3; cf. Talmud Megillah 13b), Esther was a descendant of Sarah, and the 127 provinces over which Ahasuerus ruled correspond exactly to Sarah's 127 years of life. Thus, her granddaughter came to rule over as many provinces as her grandmother had lived years. Sarah is the only woman in the entire Hebrew Bible whose exact age at death is mentioned. This has been interpreted as an expression of her special status as a matriarch of the people of Israel.*
