The years of Jacob's (Israel's) life
In Genesis 47:28 it is stated that Jacob lived for 147 years, of which 17 were spent in Egypt. Jacob's 147 years mark the end of the patriarchal era and the transition to Israel's sojourn in Egypt, a central event in Jewish salvation history. The number carries deep symbolic resonance linked to perfection and divine order, as it is closely connected to the number 7, which in biblical tradition represents wholeness and completion. 147 can be decomposed as 7 × 21, that is, 7 × 3 × 7. This structure reinforces the symbolic meaning of the number 7 (perfection) and 3 (divine wholeness), giving Jacob's lifespan a mathematical-symbolic dimension. Rabbinic tradition (Rashi on Gen 47:28) notes that Jacob spent 17 years in Egypt – the same number of years Joseph spent with his father in Canaan before being sold by his brothers.
