The number 666 is the number of the beast in Revelation (Rev 13:18), where it is described as "a man's number" that requires wisdom to understand. It represents triple human imperfection — six repeated three times as a dark parody of the triple holiness in Isaiah 6:3 ("Holy, holy, holy"). While God's triune holiness is perfect, 666 stands as a blasphemous imitation — humanity exalted to the divine, yet forever inadequate. The number symbolizes ultimate human rebellion against God, false worship, and totalitarian power that demands the loyalty belonging only to God. King Solomon received 666 talents of gold annually (1 Kings 10:14; 2 Chron 9:13). In a biblical context, this marks the peak of Solomon's wealth, but the context in the books of Kings shows that this prosperity was linked to early apostasy and idolatry, leading commentators to see a typological connection to the number of the beast. Revelation 13:18 urges the reader to 'calculate' (Greek: psēphisatō) the number of the beast, pointing toward gematria—a practice where letters have numerical values. The Hebrew נרון קסר (Nerōn Qēsar, Nero Caesar) yields the value 666, and many scholars see this as a contemporary reference to Emperor Nero, who persecuted Christians. The Latin form Nero Caesar gives 616, a variant actually found in some early manuscripts of Revelation. In Ezra 2:13, the descendants of Adonikam number 666. The name Adonikam (אֲדֹנִיקָם) means 'my lord has risen'—a formulation some commentators have noted as a striking parallel to the beast's claim to dominion, although this was likely not the original intent in the text of Ezra. Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 180 AD), in 'Against Heresies' (5.28–30), discussed several possible interpretations of 666, including the Greek words Lateinos (the Latin kingdom) and Teitan. He nevertheless warned against definitively identifying the beast, emphasizing that the number would become clear only with the fulfillment of prophecy.*
