Ascension Day

Kristi himmelsfärd

Jesus ascends to heaven and gives the Great Commission.

Bibelsk grunnlag

Forty days after the resurrection, Jesus ascends to heaven from the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:6-11). He gives the disciples the promise: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth." Two men in white robes say: "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way." The Great Commission: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matt 28:18-20). Luke 24:50-53: Jesus blesses them and ascends.

Betydning

The Ascension does not mean that Jesus leaves the world, but that he reigns from God's right hand with all authority. Christ is not gone — he is present everywhere through the Spirit. The Great Commission is the consequence: because all authority has been given to him, the gospel must reach all people. The promise of the Spirit fills the waiting period with expectation, not emptiness.

GT-forbindelser

Elijah's ascension in a chariot of fire — Elisha takes up Elijah's cloak and receives a double portion of his spirit (2 Kings 2:1-15). A direct parallel: as Elijah ascends and Elisha receives the spirit, Jesus ascends and the disciples receive the Spirit. Psalm 47: "God has gone up with a shout." Psalm 110:1: "Sit at my right hand." Daniel 7:13-14 about the Son of Man who is brought before God and given eternal dominion.

Liturgisk kontekst

White color. Celebrated on Thursday (40 days after Easter). Public holiday in many countries. In some traditions, the Paschal candle is extinguished this day as a symbol of Jesus' visible absence. The ten days between Ascension and Pentecost are a time of prayer.

Historie

Ascension Day has been known as a separate celebration since the 4th century (earlier celebrated together with Pentecost). Augustine calls it one of the oldest Christian festivals. In the Middle Ages, dramatic presentations became common in which a figure of Christ was raised through a hole in the church ceiling.
