The Assyrian's March Against Jerusalem and God's Deliverance
The Lord comforts His people in Zion and promises that the yoke of the Assyrian will be lifted from their shoulders, just as He once struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb and brought the people out of Egypt. The prophet describes the enemy's march through the cities of Judah—Aiath, Migron, Michmash, Geba, Ramah, Gibeah of Saul, Gallim, Laishah, Anathoth, Madmenah, and Gebim—all the way to Nob, where he raises his hand against the mountain of the daughter of Zion. But the Lord Himself will cut down the proud branches with an axe, and Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
Jesaja 10,24-34
24Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts, says this: "My people who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of Assyria, though he strikes you with the rod and lifts up his club against you as Egypt did.
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ צְבָא֔וֹת אַל־תִּירָ֥א עַמִּ֛י יֹשֵׁ֥ב צִיּ֖וֹן מֵֽאַשּׁ֑וּר בַּשֵּׁ֣בֶט יַכֶּ֔כָּה וּמַטֵּ֥הוּ יִשָּֽׂא־עָלֶ֖יךָ בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
25For in a very little while my fury will be spent, and my anger will turn to their destruction.
כִּי־ע֖וֹד מְעַ֣ט מִזְעָ֑ר וְכָ֣לָה זַ֔עַם וְאַפִּ֖י עַל־תַּבְלִיתָֽם׃
26The LORD of hosts will raise a whip against him, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb; he will lift his staff over the sea as he did in Egypt.
וְעוֹרֵ֨ר עָלָ֜יו יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ שׁ֔וֹט כְּמַכַּ֥ת מִדְיָ֖ן בְּצ֣וּר עוֹרֵ֑ב וּמַטֵּ֙הוּ֙ עַל־הַיָּ֔ם וּנְשָׂא֖וֹ בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
27On that day his burden will be lifted from your shoulder and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.^[The Hebrew of this last clause is obscure; literally "because of fatness" — probably the neck grown too strong and full for the yoke.]
וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יָס֤וּר סֻבֳּלוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל שִׁכְמֶ֔ךָ וְעֻלּ֖וֹ מֵעַ֣ל צַוָּארֶ֑ךָ וְחֻבַּ֥ל עֹ֖ל מִפְּנֵי־שָֽׁמֶן׃
28He comes against Aiath, passes through Migron, stores his equipment at Michmash.
בָּ֥א עַל־עַיַּ֖ת עָבַ֣ר בְּמִגְר֑וֹן לְמִכְמָ֖שׂ יַפְקִ֥יד כֵּלָֽיו׃
29They cross the pass: "We will camp for the night at Geba." Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled.
עָֽבְרוּ֙ מַעְבָּרָ֔ה גֶּ֖בַע מָל֣וֹן לָ֑נוּ חָֽרְדָה֙ הָֽרָמָ֔ה גִּבְעַ֥ת שָׁא֖וּל נָֽסָה׃
30Cry aloud, daughter of Gallim! Listen, Laishah! Poor Anathoth!
צַהֲלִ֥י קוֹלֵ֖ךְ בַּת־גַּלִּ֑ים הַקְשִׁ֥יבִי לַ֖יְשָׁה עֲנִיָּ֥ה עֲנָתֽוֹת׃
31Madmenah is in flight; the people of Gebim take cover.
נָדְדָ֖ה מַדְמֵנָ֑ה יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הַגֵּבִ֖ים הֵעִֽיזוּ׃
32This very day he will halt at Nob; he shakes his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
ע֥וֹד הַיּ֖וֹם בְּנֹ֣ב לַֽעֲמֹ֑ד יְנֹפֵ֤ף יָדוֹ֙ הַ֣ר *בית־**בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן גִּבְעַ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ ס
33Look: the Lord, the LORD of hosts, will lop off the branches with terrifying power. The tallest trees will be cut down, and the lofty ones brought low.
הִנֵּ֤ה הָאָדוֹן֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת מְסָעֵ֥ף פֻּארָ֖ה בְּמַעֲרָצָ֑ה וְרָמֵ֤י הַקּוֹמָה֙ גְּדוּעִ֔ים וְהַגְּבֹהִ֖ים יִשְׁפָּֽלוּ׃
34He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
וְנִקַּ֛ף סִֽבְכֵ֥י הַיַּ֖עַר בַּבַּרְזֶ֑ל וְהַלְּבָנ֖וֹן בְּאַדִּ֥יר יִפּֽוֹל׃ ס
