Dan's Inheritance and the Conquest of Laish
The seventh lot fell to the tribe of Dan, including cities such as Zorah, Eshtaol, Ekron, and the area near Jaffa. When their allotted territory was lost to them, the Danites went up, fought against Laish, captured the city, and renamed it Dan after their ancestor.
Josua 19,40-48
40The seventh lot came out for the tribe of Dan, clan by clan.
לְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־דָ֖ן לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם יָצָ֖א הַגּוֹרָ֥ל הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃
41The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh,
וַיְהִ֖י גְּב֣וּל נַחֲלָתָ֑ם צָרְעָ֥ה וְאֶשְׁתָּא֖וֹל וְעִ֥יר שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃
42Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,
וְשַֽׁעֲלַבִּ֥ין וְאַיָּל֖וֹן וְיִתְלָֽה׃
43Elon, Timnah, Ekron,
וְאֵיל֥וֹן וְתִמְנָ֖תָה וְעֶקְרֽוֹן׃
44Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,
וְאֶלְתְּקֵ֥ה וְגִבְּת֖וֹן וּבַעֲלָֽת׃
45Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon,
וִיהֻ֥ד וּבְנֵֽי־בְרַ֖ק וְגַת־רִמּֽוֹן׃
46Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border facing Joppa.
וּמֵ֥י הַיַּרְק֖וֹן וְהָֽרַקּ֑וֹן עִֽם־הַגְּב֖וּל מ֥וּל יָפֽוֹ׃
47But the territory of the Danites proved too small for them, so they marched up and attacked Leshem. They captured it, put it to the sword, took possession of it, and settled there. They named Leshem Dan, after their ancestor Dan.
וַיֵּצֵ֥א גְבוּל־בְּנֵי־דָ֖ן מֵהֶ֑ם וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בְנֵֽי־דָ֠ן וַיִּלָּחֲמ֨וּ עִם־לֶ֜שֶׁם וַיִּלְכְּד֥וּ אוֹתָ֣הּ ׀ וַיַּכּ֧וּ אוֹתָ֣הּ לְפִי־חֶ֗רֶב וַיִּֽרְשׁ֤וּ אוֹתָהּ֙ וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ בָ֔הּ וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ לְלֶ֙שֶׁם֙ דָּ֔ן כְּשֵׁ֖ם דָּ֥ן אֲבִיהֶֽם׃
48These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the tribe of Dan, clan by clan.
זֹ֗את נַחֲלַ֛ת מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־דָ֖ן לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם הֶֽעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ פ
