The Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda
Jesus heals a man who had been sick for 38 years at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem on the Sabbath.
Johannesevangeliet 5,1-15
1Some time later there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Μετὰ ταῦτα ⸀ἦν ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ ⸀ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
2Now in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, there is a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five covered colonnades.
ἔστιν δὲ ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐπὶ τῇ προβατικῇ κολυμβήθρα ἡ ἐπιλεγομένη Ἑβραϊστὶ ⸀Βηθεσδά, πέντε στοὰς ἔχουσα·
3In these lay a great number of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed—waiting for the water to be stirred.[^1]

ἐν ταύταις κατέκειτο ⸀πλῆθος τῶν ἀσθενούντων, τυφλῶν, χωλῶν, ⸀ξηρῶν.
4For at certain times an angel would come down into the pool and stir up the water; and the first to step in after the water was stirred was healed of whatever illness had held him.
ἄγγελος γὰρ κατὰ καιρὸν κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ κολυμβήθρᾳ, καὶ ἐτάρασσεν τὸ ὕδωρ· ὁ οὖν πρῶτος ἐμβὰς μετὰ τὴν ταραχὴν τοῦ ὕδατος, ὑγιὴς ἐγίνετο, ᾧ δήποτε κατείχετο νοσήματι.
5One man there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
ἦν δέ τις ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖ ⸀τριάκοντα ὀκτὼ ἔτη ἔχων ἐν τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ ⸀αὐτοῦ·
6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been like this for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?"
τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς κατακείμενον, καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει, λέγει αὐτῷ· Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι;
7The sick man answered, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am on my way, someone else goes down ahead of me."
ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ ἀσθενῶν· Κύριε, ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἔχω ἵνα ὅταν ταραχθῇ τὸ ὕδωρ βάλῃ με εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν· ἐν ᾧ δὲ ἔρχομαι ἐγὼ ἄλλος πρὸ ἐμοῦ καταβαίνει.
8Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your mat and walk."
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ⸀Ἔγειρε ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει.
9At once the man was made well; he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a Sabbath.
καὶ εὐθέως ἐγένετο ὑγιὴς ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἦρε τὸν κράβαττον αὐτοῦ καὶ περιεπάτει. Ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ.
10So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; you are not permitted to carry your mat."
ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τῷ τεθεραπευμένῳ· Σάββατόν ἐστιν, ⸀καὶ οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἆραι τὸν ⸀κράβαττον.
11But he answered them, "The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.'"
⸂ὃς δὲ⸃ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς· Ὁ ποιήσας με ὑγιῆ ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει.
12They asked him, "Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?"
ἠρώτησαν ⸀οὖν αὐτόν· Τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ εἰπών σοι· ⸀Ἆρον καὶ περιπάτει;
13But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in that place.
ὁ δὲ ἰαθεὶς οὐκ ᾔδει τίς ἐστιν, ὁ γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐξένευσεν ὄχλου ὄντος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ.
14Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, or something worse may happen to you."
μετὰ ταῦτα εὑρίσκει αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἴδε ὑγιὴς γέγονας· μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε, ἵνα μὴ χεῖρόν ⸂σοί τι⸃ γένηται.
15The man went off and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
ἀπῆλθεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ⸀ἀνήγγειλεν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὸν ὑγιῆ.
