The Inheritance of Ephraim and Manasseh
The lot fell to the children of Joseph, and the chapter describes the borders of the inheritance for Ephraim and Manasseh, from the Jordan at Jericho through the wilderness and the mountains to Bethel, continuing via Beth-Horon and Gezer to the sea. It concludes with the note that Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites in Gezer but made them perform forced labor.
Josua 16,1-10
1The lot for the descendants of Joseph ran from the Jordan at Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, through the wilderness that climbs from Jericho into the hill country of Bethel.
וַיֵּצֵ֨א הַגּוֹרָ֜ל לִבְנֵ֤י יוֹסֵף֙ מִיַּרְדֵּ֣ן יְרִיח֔וֹ לְמֵ֥י יְרִיח֖וֹ מִזְרָ֑חָה הַמִּדְבָּ֗ר עֹלֶ֧ה מִירִיח֛וֹ בָּהָ֖ר בֵּֽית־אֵֽל׃
2From Bethel it went on to Luz and crossed over to the territory of the Archites at Ataroth.
וְיָצָ֥א מִבֵּֽית־אֵ֖ל ל֑וּזָה וְעָבַ֛ר אֶל־גְּב֥וּל הָאַרְכִּ֖י עֲטָרֽוֹת׃
3Then it went down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of Lower Beth-horon and on to Gezer, and it ended at the Great Sea.
וְיָֽרַד־יָ֜מָּה אֶל־גְּב֣וּל הַיַּפְלֵטִ֗י עַ֣ד גְּב֧וּל בֵּית־חוֹרֹ֛ן תַּחְתּ֖וֹן וְעַד־גָּ֑זֶר וְהָי֥וּ *תצאתו **תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו יָֽמָּה׃
4So the descendants of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance.
וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ בְנֵי־יוֹסֵ֖ף מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה וְאֶפְרָֽיִם׃
5This was the territory of the Ephraimites, clan by clan: the boundary of their inheritance ran from Ataroth-addar on the east to Upper Beth-horon,
וַיְהִ֛י גְּב֥וּל בְּנֵֽי־אֶפְרַ֖יִם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם וַיְהִ֞י גְּב֤וּל נַחֲלָתָם֙ מִזְרָ֔חָה עַטְר֣וֹת אַדָּ֔ר עַד־בֵּ֥ית חוֹרֹ֖ן עֶלְיֽוֹן׃
6From there the boundary ran westward, with Michmethath on the north, and it turned eastward to Taanath-shiloh and passed by it on the east of Janoah.
וְיָצָ֨א הַגְּב֜וּל הַיָּ֗מָּה הַֽמִּכְמְתָת֙ מִצָּפ֔וֹן וְנָסַ֧ב הַגְּב֛וּל מִזְרָ֖חָה תַּאֲנַ֣ת שִׁלֹ֑ה וְעָבַ֣ר אוֹת֔וֹ מִמִּזְרַ֖ח יָנֽוֹחָה׃
7Then it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and Naarah, touched Jericho, and came out at the Jordan.
וְיָרַ֥ד מִיָּנ֖וֹחָה עֲטָר֣וֹת וְנַעֲרָ֑תָה וּפָגַע֙ בִּֽירִיח֔וֹ וְיָצָ֖א הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
8From Tappuah the boundary ran west to the Kanah Ravine and ended at the sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of Ephraim, clan by clan,
מִתַּפּ֜וּחַ יֵלֵ֨ךְ הַגְּב֥וּל יָ֙מָּה֙ נַ֣חַל קָנָ֔ה וְהָי֥וּ תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו הַיָּ֑מָּה זֹ֗את נַחֲלַ֛ת מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־אֶפְרַ֖יִם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃
9together with all the towns and their villages that were set apart for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.
וְהֶעָרִ֗ים הַמִּבְדָּלוֹת֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם בְּת֖וֹךְ נַחֲלַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כָּֽל־הֶעָרִ֖ים וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃
10But they did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer. So the Canaanites have lived among the Ephraimites to this day, subjected to forced labor.
וְלֹ֣א הוֹרִ֔ישׁוּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּגָ֑זֶר וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜י בְּקֶ֤רֶב אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ עַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיְהִ֖י לְמַס־עֹבֵֽד׃ פ
