Healing of a Demon-Possessed Boy
The day after the transfiguration on the mountain, Jesus meets a large crowd. A father cries out and asks Jesus to look at his only son, who is tormented by a spirit that seizes and convulses him. The disciples have been unable to drive it out, and Jesus rebukes the unbelieving and perverse generation. He commands the unclean spirit, heals the boy, and gives him back to his father. While the people marvel at God's greatness, Jesus predicts that the Son of Man will be handed over into human hands, but the disciples do not understand.
Lukasevangeliet 9,37-45
37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
Ἐγένετο ⸀δὲ τῇ ἑξῆς ἡμέρᾳ κατελθόντων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄρους συνήντησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς.
38A man in the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg you, look at my son — he is my only child.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ⸀ἐβόησεν λέγων· Διδάσκαλε, δέομαί σου ἐπιβλέψαι ἐπὶ τὸν υἱόν μου, ὅτι μονογενής ⸂μοί ἐστιν⸃,
39A spirit seizes him, and suddenly he screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It leaves him only with great difficulty, and it mauls him as it goes.
καὶ ἰδοὺ πνεῦμα λαμβάνει αὐτόν, καὶ ἐξαίφνης κράζει, καὶ σπαράσσει αὐτὸν μετὰ ἀφροῦ καὶ ⸀μόγις ἀποχωρεῖ ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ συντρῖβον αὐτόν·
40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not."
καὶ ἐδεήθην τῶν μαθητῶν σου ἵνα ἐκβάλωσιν αὐτό, καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν.
41Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long must I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ὦ γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη, ἕως πότε ἔσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν; προσάγαγε ⸂ὧδε τὸν υἱόν σου⸃.
42Even as the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
ἔτι δὲ προσερχομένου αὐτοῦ ἔρρηξεν αὐτὸν τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ συνεσπάραξεν· ἐπετίμησεν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ, καὶ ἰάσατο τὸν παῖδα καὶ ἀπέδωκεν αὐτὸν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ.
43They were all astonished at the majesty of God. While everyone was marveling at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples,
ἐξεπλήσσοντο δὲ πάντες ἐπὶ τῇ μεγαλειότητι τοῦ θεοῦ. Πάντων δὲ θαυμαζόντων ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ⸀ἐποίει εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ·
44"Let these words sink deep into your ears: the Son of Man is about to be delivered into human hands."
Θέσθε ὑμεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν τοὺς λόγους τούτους, ὁ γὰρ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μέλλει παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων.
45But they did not understand this saying; it was hidden from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
οἱ δὲ ἠγνόουν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, καὶ ἦν παρακεκαλυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἵνα μὴ αἴσθωνται αὐτό, καὶ ἐφοβοῦντο ἐρωτῆσαι αὐτὸν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου.
