The Lord's Judgment on Israel through the Prophet Amos
The Lord speaks against Israel and reminds them that He has chosen them from among all the families of the earth, and therefore will punish them for their sins. Through a series of images – the lion that roars, the bird in the snare, the horn that sounds the alarm – the prophet Amos shows that no disaster happens without the Lord’s will, and that the Lord does nothing without revealing it to his servants the prophets. Amos announces that an enemy will surround the land, tear down Samaria’s strength, and plunder the palaces. The altars in Bethel will be destroyed, and both winter houses and summer houses, ivory houses and splendid dwellings will perish as punishment for the people’s violence and injustice.
Amos 3,1-15
1Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, people of Israel — against the whole family I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
2You alone have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will call you to account for all your iniquities.
3Do two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?
4Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl from his den unless he has caught something?
5Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground where no snare is set for it? Does a trap spring up from the earth when it has caught nothing at all?
6If a ram's horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble? If disaster comes to a city, has the LORD not done it?
7Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing his counsel to his servants the prophets.
8The lion has roared — who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken — who can but prophesy?
9Proclaim it over the citadels of Ashdod and over the citadels in the land of Egypt, and say: Gather on the mountains of Samaria and see the great turmoil within her and the oppression in her midst.
10They do not know how to do what is right, declares the LORD — those who store up violence and plunder in their citadels.
11Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down your defenses, and your citadels will be plundered.
12This is what the LORD says: As a shepherd rescues from the lion's mouth two legs or a scrap of an ear, so shall the people of Israel be rescued — those who sit in Samaria on the edge of a bed, on the corner of a couch.
13Hear this and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of hosts:
14For on the day I punish Israel for its transgressions, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.
15I will strike down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will perish, and many houses will come to an end, declares the LORD.
