Jesus Teaches About Impurity and Korban
The Pharisees and the scribes from Jerusalem confront Jesus because his disciples eat with unwashed hands. Jesus answers by quoting Isaiah about hypocrites who honor God with their lips, and he accuses them of setting aside God's command in favor of human tradition. He uses the example of Korban, where people declare property as a gift to God so they can avoid helping their parents. To the crowd he explains that it is not what enters a person from outside that makes them unclean, but what comes out of the heart—evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, and more. In this way he declares all food clean.
Markusevangeliet 7,1-23
1The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him,
Καὶ συνάγονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καί τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων
2and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands—that is, unwashed.
καὶ ἰδόντες τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ⸂ὅτι κοιναῖς χερσίν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν ἀνίπτοις, ἐσθίουσιν⸃ ⸀τοὺς ⸀ἄρτους—
3For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, holding to the tradition of the elders;
οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν, κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων,
4and when they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. There are many other traditions they keep as well: the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.
καὶ ἀπʼ ⸀ἀγορᾶς ἐὰν μὴ ⸀βαπτίσωνται οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν, καὶ ἄλλα πολλά ἐστιν ἃ παρέλαβον κρατεῖν, βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων ⸂καὶ κλινῶν⸃—
5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands?"
⸀καὶ ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς· Διὰ τί ⸂οὐ περιπατοῦσιν οἱ μαθηταί σου⸃ κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων, ἀλλὰ ⸀κοιναῖς χερσὶν ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἄρτον;
6He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.'
ὁ ⸀δὲ εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· Καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἠσαΐας περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν, ὡς γέγραπται ⸀ὅτι Οὗτος ὁ λαὸς τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ, ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ·
7'Their worship of me is empty, for they teach as doctrine the commandments of men.'
μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με, διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων·
8You have let go of the commandment of God and hold instead to the tradition of men."
⸀ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ⸀ἀνθρώπων.
9And he said to them, "How neatly you set aside the commandment of God in order to maintain your own tradition!
Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν ⸀τηρήσητε·
10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.'
Μωϋσῆς γὰρ εἶπεν· Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου, καί· Ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω·
11But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might have received from me is Corban'—that is, an offering to God—
ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε· Ἐὰν εἴπῃ ἄνθρωπος τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί· Κορβᾶν, ὅ ἐστιν Δῶρον, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς,
12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.
⸀οὐκέτι ἀφίετε αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ποιῆσαι τῷ ⸀πατρὶ ἢ τῇ ⸀μητρί,
13So you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do many other things like this."
ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ τῇ παραδόσει ὑμῶν ᾗ παρεδώκατε· καὶ παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε.
14Then he called the crowd to him again and said, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand:
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ⸀πάλιν τὸν ὄχλον ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· ⸀Ἀκούσατέ μου πάντες καὶ ⸀σύνετε.
15nothing outside a person can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him."
οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς αὐτὸν ὃ δύναται ⸂κοινῶσαι αὐτόν⸃· ἀλλὰ τὰ ⸂ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενά⸃ ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ⸀ἄνθρωπον.
16If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.
Εἴ τις ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν ἀκουέτω
17When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable.
Καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν ⸀εἰς οἶκον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου, ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ⸂τὴν παραβολήν⸃.
18He said to them, "Are you also without understanding? Don't you see that nothing entering a person from outside can defile him,
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε; οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἔξωθεν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι,
19since it does not go into his heart but into his stomach, and then passes out of the body?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλʼ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν, καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεται;— ⸀καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα.
20And he said, "It is what comes out of a person that defiles him.
ἔλεγεν δὲ ὅτι Τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον·
21For from within, out of the human heart, come evil thoughts: sexual immorality, theft, murder,
ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται, ⸂πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, φόνοι,
22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, arrogance, folly.
μοιχεῖαι⸃, πλεονεξίαι, πονηρίαι, δόλος, ἀσέλγεια, ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός, βλασφημία, ὑπερηφανία, ἀφροσύνη·
23All these evils come from within, and they defile a person."
πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἔσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
