Jehoiakim's Rebellion and Jehoiachin's Exile
The chapter tells of King Jehoiakim's rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his death, and the succession of his son Jehoiachin. Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem, and King Jehoiachin surrenders. The king of Babylon carries away the temple treasures, cuts up the gold vessels that Solomon had made, and exiles Jehoiachin along with the royal family, nobles, warriors, and craftsmen to Babylon. He installs Mattaniah, Jehoiakim's uncle, as king and gives him the name Zedekiah.

1During his reign Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded the land, and Jehoiakim was his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.
בְּיָמָ֣יו עָלָ֔ה נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל וַיְהִי־ל֨וֹ יְהוֹיָקִ֥ים עֶ֙בֶד֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וַיָּ֖שָׁב וַיִּמְרָד־בּֽוֹ׃
2The LORD sent raiding bands against him—Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, in keeping with the word the LORD had spoken through his servants the prophets.
וַיְשַׁלַּ֣ח יְהוָ֣ה ׀ בּ֡וֹ אֶת־גְּדוּדֵ֣י כַשְׂדִּים֩ וְאֶת־גְּדוּדֵ֨י אֲרָ֜ם וְאֵ֣ת ׀ גְּדוּדֵ֣י מוֹאָ֗ב וְאֵת֙ גְּדוּדֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עַמּ֔וֹן וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥ם בִּֽיהוּדָ֖ה לְהַֽאֲבִיד֑וֹ כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֔ר בְּיַ֖ד עֲבָדָ֥יו הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃
3Surely this came upon Judah at the LORD's command, to remove them from his presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all that he had done,
אַ֣ךְ ׀ עַל־פִּ֣י יְהוָ֗ה הָֽיְתָה֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה לְהָסִ֖יר מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑יו בְּחַטֹּ֣את מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה כְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃
4and also because of the innocent blood he had shed—he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.
וְגַ֤ם דַּֽם־הַנָּקִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁפָ֔ךְ וַיְמַלֵּ֥א אֶת־יְרוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם דָּ֣ם נָקִ֑י וְלֹֽא־אָבָ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לִסְלֹֽחַ׃
5As for the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did—are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
וְיֶ֛תֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוֹיָקִ֖ים וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה הֲלֹא־הֵ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃
6Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin became king in his place.
וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב יְהוֹיָקִ֖ים עִם־אֲבֹתָ֑יו וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יְהוֹיָכִ֥ין בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃
7The king of Egypt did not march out from his own land again, for the king of Babylon had taken all that belonged to him, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
וְלֹֽא־הֹסִ֥יף עוֹד֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָצֵ֖את מֵֽאַרְצ֑וֹ כִּֽי־לָקַ֞ח מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֗ל מִנַּ֤חַל מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ עַד־נְהַר־פְּרָ֔ת כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיְתָ֖ה לְמֶ֥לֶךְ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ פ
8Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother's name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan, from Jerusalem.
בֶּן־שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה שָׁנָה֙ יְהוֹיָכִ֣ין בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה חֳדָשִׁ֔ים מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ נְחֻשְׁתָּ֥א בַת־אֶלְנָתָ֖ן מִירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃
9He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father had done.
וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֖ה אָבִֽיו׃
10At that time the officers of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem and laid siege to the city.
בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא *עלה **עָל֗וּ עַבְדֵ֛י נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וַתָּבֹ֥א הָעִ֖יר בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃
11Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon himself came against the city while his officers had it under siege.
וַיָּבֹ֛א נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל עַל־הָעִ֑יר וַעֲבָדָ֖יו צָרִ֥ים עָלֶֽיהָ׃
12Jehoiachin king of Judah surrendered to the king of Babylon, along with his mother, his servants, his officials, and his court attendants. The king of Babylon took him captive in the eighth year of his own reign.
וַיֵּצֵ֞א יְהוֹיָכִ֤ין מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה֙ עַל־מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל ה֣וּא וְאִמּ֔וֹ וַעֲבָדָ֖יו וְשָׂרָ֣יו וְסָֽרִיסָ֑יו וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֹתוֹ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל בִּשְׁנַ֥ת שְׁמֹנֶ֖ה לְמָלְכֽוֹ׃
13He carried off from there all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the royal palace, and he stripped away all the gold objects that Solomon king of Israel had made for the temple of the LORD—just as the LORD had said.
וַיּוֹצֵ֣א מִשָּׁ֗ם אֶת־כָּל־אוֹצְרוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְאֽוֹצְר֖וֹת בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיְקַצֵּ֞ץ אֶת־כָּל־כְּלֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֗ב אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֜ה שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּהֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃
14He carried all Jerusalem into exile: all the officials and all the fighting men, ten thousand captives in all, and every craftsman and metalworker. No one was left except the poorest people of the land.
וְהִגְלָ֣ה אֶת־כָּל־יְ֠רוּשָׁלִַם וְֽאֶת־כָּל־הַשָּׂרִ֞ים וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֗יִל *עשרה **עֲשֶׂ֤רֶת אֲלָפִים֙ גּוֹלֶ֔ה וְכָל־הֶחָרָ֖שׁ וְהַמַּסְגֵּ֑ר לֹ֣א נִשְׁאַ֔ר זוּלַ֖ת דַּלַּ֥ת עַם־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
15He deported Jehoiachin to Babylon, along with the king's mother, the king's wives, his court attendants, and the leading men of the land; he led them into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
וַיֶּ֥גֶל אֶת־יְהוֹיָכִ֖ין בָּבֶ֑לָה וְאֶת־אֵ֣ם הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ וְאֶת־נְשֵׁ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וְאֶת־סָרִיסָ֗יו וְאֵת֙ *אולי **אֵילֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ הוֹלִ֛יךְ גּוֹלָ֥ה מִירוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם בָּבֶֽלָה׃
16The king of Babylon also brought into exile in Babylon all seven thousand fighting men and a thousand craftsmen and metalworkers—all of them strong and fit for war.
וְאֵת֩ כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַחַ֜יִל שִׁבְעַ֣ת אֲלָפִ֗ים וְהֶחָרָ֤שׁ וְהַמַּסְגֵּר֙ אֶ֔לֶף הַכֹּ֕ל גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים עֹשֵׂ֣י מִלְחָמָ֑ה וַיְבִיאֵ֧ם מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֛ל גּוֹלָ֖ה בָּבֶֽלָה׃
17The king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
וַיַּמְלֵ֧ךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֛ל אֶת־מַתַּנְיָ֥ה דֹד֖וֹ תַּחְתָּ֑יו וַיַּסֵּ֥ב אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ פ
