The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
Jesus tells of a man who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a winepress and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went abroad. When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to collect the fruit, but the tenants beat some, killed others and stoned the rest. He sent more servants, but they were treated the same way. Finally he sent his own son, saying, "They will respect my son." But the tenants said, "This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance!" So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Jesus asks what the owner of the vineyard will do, and answers that he will give the vineyard to others who will bear its fruit. He quotes Scripture: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." The kingdom of God will be taken from them and given to a people who produce its fruits. The chief priests and the Pharisees understood that he was speaking about them, and wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd.

33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away on a journey.
Ἄλλην παραβολὴν ἀκούσατε. ⸀Ἄνθρωπος ἦν οἰκοδεσπότης ὅστις ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ φραγμὸν αὐτῷ περιέθηκεν καὶ ὤρυξεν ἐν αὐτῷ ληνὸν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν.
34When harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.
ὅτε δὲ ἤγγισεν ὁ καιρὸς τῶν καρπῶν, ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς λαβεῖν τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ.
35But the tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
καὶ λαβόντες οἱ γεωργοὶ τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὃν μὲν ἔδειραν, ὃν δὲ ἀπέκτειναν, ὃν δὲ ἐλιθοβόλησαν.
36Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they treated them the same way.
πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους πλείονας τῶν πρώτων, καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς ὡσαύτως.
37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων· Ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου.
38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'
οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἰδόντες τὸν υἱὸν εἶπον ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ ⸀σχῶμεν τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ·
39So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἐξέβαλον ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος καὶ ἀπέκτειναν.
40Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"
ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις;
41They said to him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruit at the proper seasons."
λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Κακοὺς κακῶς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς, καὶ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἐκδώσεται ἄλλοις γεωργοῖς, οἵτινες ἀποδώσουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς καρποὺς ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς αὐτῶν.
42Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας· παρὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστιν θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν;
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀρθήσεται ἀφʼ ὑμῶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ δοθήσεται ἔθνει ποιοῦντι τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς.
44Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone it falls on will be crushed."
⸂Καὶ ὁ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὸν λίθον τοῦτον συνθλασθήσεται· ἐφʼ ὃν δʼ ἂν πέσῃ λικμήσει αὐτόν.⸃
45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them.
Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τὰς παραβολὰς αὐτοῦ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι περὶ αὐτῶν λέγει·
46They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet.
καὶ ζητοῦντες αὐτὸν κρατῆσαι ἐφοβήθησαν τοὺς ὄχλους, ⸂ἐπεὶ εἰς⸃ προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον.
Markusevangeliet 12,1-12
1Then he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away on a journey.
Καὶ ἤρξατο αὐτοῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς ⸀λαλεῖν· Ἀμπελῶνα ⸂ἄνθρωπος ἐφύτευσεν⸃, καὶ περιέθηκεν φραγμὸν καὶ ὤρυξεν ὑπολήνιον καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν.
2When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς τῷ καιρῷ δοῦλον, ἵνα παρὰ τῶν γεωργῶν λάβῃ ἀπὸ ⸂τῶν καρπῶν⸃ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος·
3But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
⸀καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἔδειραν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν κενόν.
4Again he sent them another servant, and that one they struck on the head and treated shamefully.
καὶ πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἄλλον δοῦλον· ⸀κἀκεῖνον ⸀ἐκεφαλίωσαν καὶ ⸀ἠτίμασαν.
5He sent another, and that one they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, others they killed.
⸀καὶ ἄλλον ἀπέστειλεν· κἀκεῖνον ἀπέκτειναν, καὶ πολλοὺς ἄλλους, ⸂οὓς μὲν δέροντες οὓς δὲ ἀποκτέννοντες⸃.
6He still had one left, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
ἔτι ⸂ἕνα εἶχεν, υἱὸν ἀγαπητόν· ἀπέστειλεν⸃ αὐτὸν ⸂ἔσχατον πρὸς αὐτοὺς⸃ λέγων ὅτι Ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου.
7But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οἱ γεωργοὶ ⸂πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς εἶπαν⸃ ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἡμῶν ἔσται ἡ κληρονομία.
8So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
καὶ λαβόντες ⸂ἀπέκτειναν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν⸃ ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος.
9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.
⸀τί ποιήσει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος; ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργούς, καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἄλλοις.
10Have you never read this Scripture: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
οὐδὲ τὴν γραφὴν ταύτην ἀνέγνωτε· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας·
11this came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
παρὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστιν θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν;
12They were looking for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd, for they knew he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
Καὶ ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν κρατῆσαι, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν ὄχλον, ἔγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παραβολὴν εἶπεν. καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθον.
Lukasevangeliet 20,9-19
9Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went abroad for a long time.
Ἤρξατο δὲ πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγειν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην· ⸀Ἄνθρωπος ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν χρόνους ἱκανούς.
10At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
⸀καὶ καιρῷ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς δοῦλον, ἵνα ἀπὸ τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ⸀δώσουσιν αὐτῷ· οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ⸂ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν δείραντες⸃ κενόν.
11He sent another servant, and that one too they beat and humiliated and sent away empty-handed.
καὶ προσέθετο ⸂ἕτερον πέμψαι⸃ δοῦλον· οἱ δὲ κἀκεῖνον δείραντες καὶ ἀτιμάσαντες ἐξαπέστειλαν κενόν.
12He sent yet a third, and this one they wounded and threw out.
καὶ προσέθετο ⸂τρίτον πέμψαι⸃· οἱ δὲ καὶ τοῦτον τραυματίσαντες ἐξέβαλον.
13Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.'
εἶπεν δὲ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος· Τί ποιήσω; πέμψω τὸν υἱόν μου τὸν ἀγαπητόν· ἴσως ⸀τοῦτον ἐντραπήσονται.
14But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned with one another and said, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.'
ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ γεωργοὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ⸀ἀλλήλους λέγοντες· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· ⸀ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν, ἵνα ἡμῶν γένηται ἡ κληρονομία·
15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
καὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν. τί οὖν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος;
16He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "May it never be!"
ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργοὺς τούτους, καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἄλλοις. ἀκούσαντες δὲ εἶπαν· Μὴ γένοιτο.
17But he looked straight at them and said, "Then what does this mean that is written: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'?
ὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπεν· Τί οὖν ἐστιν τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας;
18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone on whom it falls will be crushed."
πᾶς ὁ πεσὼν ἐπʼ ἐκεῖνον τὸν λίθον συνθλασθήσεται· ἐφʼ ὃν δʼ ἂν πέσῃ, λικμήσει αὐτόν.
19The scribes and the chief priests wanted to lay hands on him that very hour, but they were afraid of the people, for they knew he had told this parable against them.
καὶ ἐζήτησαν οἱ ⸂γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς⸃ ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν ⸂τὸν λαόν⸃, ἔγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς ⸂εἶπεν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην⸃.
