Moses' warning about images of God and the consequences of the covenant

Moses warns the people against making carved images and reminds them of God's presence at Horeb, where they heard His voice but saw no form. He describes the consequences of breaking the covenant: being cut off from the land and scattered among the nations, but also the hope of restoration when the people turn back and seek the Lord with all their heart.

Femte Moseboken 4,15-31

15Watch yourselves very carefully, since you saw no form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire,
16so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol in any form: the likeness of a male or a female,
17the likeness of any animal on the earth or of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground or of any fish in the waters below the earth.
19And be careful, when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon, and the stars—all the host of heaven—that you are not drawn away to bow down to them and serve them, things the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under heaven.
20But you the LORD took and brought out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be his own people, his inheritance, as you are this day.
21The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I would not cross the Jordan and would not enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
22For I am going to die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan. But you will cross over and take possession of this good land.
23Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and not to make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden you.
24For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
25When you have children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, if you become corrupt and make an idol in any form, doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and provoking him to anger,
26I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live long there, but will surely be destroyed.
27The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
28There you will serve gods made by human hands, of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.
29But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find him if you search for him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to his voice.
31For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers, which he swore to them.
