Moses breaks the stone tablets at the golden calf
Moses tells how he was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights and received the tablets of the covenant written with God's finger. The Lord said that the people had made a cast calf, and Moses went down from the burning mountain. When he saw the sin, he threw the tablets away and broke them. He burned the calf, crushed it to dust, and threw it into the stream. Then he threw himself down before the Lord for another forty days and nights, praying for the people and for Aaron so that the Lord would not destroy them.
Femte Moseboken 9,9-21
9When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.
10And the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the finger of God, and on them were all the words the LORD spoke to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.
11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.
12Then the LORD said to me, "Get up, go down from here at once, for your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have acted corruptly. They have turned aside quickly from the way I commanded them; they have made themselves a cast image."
13And the LORD said to me, "I have seen this people, and indeed, they are a stiff-necked people.
14Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they."
15So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was blazing with fire, the two tablets of the covenant in my two hands.
16And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God; you had made yourselves a calf of cast metal. You had turned aside quickly from the way the LORD had commanded you.
17So I took hold of the two tablets, hurled them from my hands, and smashed them before your eyes.
18Then I fell down before the LORD as before, forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and provoking him to anger.
19For I was terrified of the fierce anger and wrath the LORD had against you, enough to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me that time as well.
20The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, so at that time I prayed for Aaron too.
21And I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. I crushed it and ground it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust, and I threw its dust into the stream that flows down from the mountain.
