Destruction of a city led into idolatry
Moses gives the procedure for when the inhabitants of an Israelite city are led by wicked men to serve other gods: the case must be investigated and examined carefully, and if it is true, the city's inhabitants and livestock shall be struck with the sword. The city and all its spoil shall be burned as a burnt offering to the Lord and become a ruin heap forever. Nothing of what is banned shall be kept, so that the Lord may turn from His wrath and show mercy.
Femte Moseboken 13,13-19
13If you hear that in one of the cities the LORD your God is giving you to live in,
כִּֽי־תִשְׁמַ֞ע בְּאַחַ֣ת עָרֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֛ לָשֶׁ֥בֶת שָׁ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃
14worthless men have gone out from among you and led the inhabitants of their city astray, saying, "Let us go and serve other gods"—gods you have not known—
יָצְא֞וּ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים בְּנֵֽי־בְלִיַּ֙עַל֙ מִקִּרְבֶּ֔ךָ וַיַּדִּ֛יחוּ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י עִירָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר נֵלְכָ֗ה וְנַעַבְדָ֛ה אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יְדַעְתֶּֽם׃
15then you shall inquire, investigate, and question thoroughly. And if it is true and confirmed that this abomination has been committed among you,
וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֧ וְחָקַרְתָּ֧ וְשָׁאַלְתָּ֖ הֵיטֵ֑ב וְהִנֵּ֤ה אֱמֶת֙ נָכ֣וֹן הַדָּבָ֔ר נֶעֶשְׂתָ֛ה הַתּוֹעֵבָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃
16you shall surely strike down the inhabitants of that city with the sword. Devote it to destruction—the city, everyone in it, and its livestock—by the sword.
הַכֵּ֣ה תַכֶּ֗ה אֶת־יֹ֥[t]שְׁבֵ֛י הָעִ֥יר *ההוא **הַהִ֖יא לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב הַחֲרֵ֨ם אֹתָ֧הּ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֛הּ וְאֶת־בְּהֶמְתָּ֖הּ לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃
17Gather all its plunder into the middle of its square and burn the city and all its plunder with fire, a whole offering to the LORD your God. It shall be a heap of ruins forever, never to be rebuilt.
וְאֶת־כָּל־שְׁלָלָ֗הּ תִּקְבֹּץ֮ אֶל־תּ֣וֹךְ רְחֹבָהּ֒ וְשָׂרַפְתָּ֨ בָאֵ֜שׁ אֶת־הָעִ֤יר וְאֶת־כָּל־שְׁלָלָהּ֙ כָּלִ֔יל לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְהָיְתָה֙ תֵּ֣ל עוֹלָ֔ם לֹ֥א תִבָּנֶ֖ה עֽוֹד׃
18Let nothing devoted to destruction cling to your hand, so that the LORD may turn from his burning anger and show you mercy, have compassion on you and multiply you, as he swore to your fathers—
וְלֹֽא־יִדְבַּ֧ק בְּיָדְךָ֛ מְא֖וּמָה מִן־הַחֵ֑רֶם לְמַעַן֩ יָשׁ֨וּב יְהוָ֜ה מֵחֲר֣וֹן אַפּ֗וֹ וְנָֽתַן־לְךָ֤ רַחֲמִים֙ וְרִֽחַמְךָ֣ וְהִרְבֶּ֔ךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃
19when you obey the voice of the LORD your God, keeping all his commandments that I am giving you today, and doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
כִּ֣י תִשְׁמַ֗ע בְּקוֹל֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לִשְׁמֹר֙ אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֺתָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּ֑וֹם לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ הַיָּשָׁ֔ר בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ ס
