Paul's Distress in Asia and God's Deliverance
Paul tells the church in Corinth about extreme distress he experienced in Asia, where he was pressed far beyond his strength and lost hope of survival. He felt that a death sentence had been passed on him, but this happened so that he would not rely on himself, but on God who raises the dead. God delivered him, and Paul asks the church to help with intercession so that many may give thanks to God for the deliverance.
Andra Korinthierbrevet 1,8-11
8For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we suffered in Asia. We were crushed beyond measure, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life itself.
9Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
10He rescued us from so deadly a peril, and he will rescue us. On him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again,
11as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many people on our behalf for the gracious gift granted to us.
