Paul and Silas in Prison at Philippi
Paul and Silas were thrown into prison in Philippi after driving a spirit of divination out of a slave girl. At midnight they sang hymns, an earthquake opened the doors, and the jailer came to faith and was baptized along with his whole household. The next day Paul demanded redress as a Roman citizen.

16Once, as we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and who earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.[fn]
Ἐγένετο δὲ πορευομένων ἡμῶν εἰς ⸀τὴν προσευχὴν παιδίσκην τινὰ ἔχουσαν πνεῦμα ⸀πύθωνα ⸀ὑπαντῆσαι ἡμῖν, ἥτις ἐργασίαν πολλὴν παρεῖχεν τοῖς κυρίοις αὐτῆς μαντευομένη·
17She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation!"
αὕτη ⸀κατακολουθοῦσα τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ ἡμῖν ἔκραζεν λέγουσα· Οὗτοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι δοῦλοι τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου εἰσίν, οἵτινες καταγγέλλουσιν ⸀ὑμῖν ὁδὸν σωτηρίας.
18She kept this up for many days. At last Paul became so annoyed that he turned and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" And it came out that very moment.
τοῦτο δὲ ἐποίει ἐπὶ πολλὰς ἡμέρας. διαπονηθεὶς ⸀δὲ Παῦλος καὶ ἐπιστρέψας τῷ πνεύματι εἶπεν· Παραγγέλλω σοι ⸀ἐν ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπʼ αὐτῆς· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ.
19When her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities.
Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ κύριοι αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς ἐργασίας αὐτῶν ἐπιλαβόμενοι τὸν Παῦλον καὶ τὸν Σιλᾶν εἵλκυσαν εἰς τὴν ἀγορὰν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας,
20They brought them to the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and they are throwing our city into an uproar.
καὶ προσαγαγόντες αὐτοὺς τοῖς στρατηγοῖς εἶπαν· Οὗτοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἐκταράσσουσιν ἡμῶν τὴν πόλιν Ἰουδαῖοι ὑπάρχοντες,
21They are promoting customs that it is not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice."
καὶ καταγγέλλουσιν ἔθη ἃ οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἡμῖν παραδέχεσθαι οὐδὲ ποιεῖν Ῥωμαίοις οὖσιν.
22The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes off Paul and Silas and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
καὶ συνεπέστη ὁ ὄχλος κατʼ αὐτῶν, καὶ οἱ στρατηγοὶ περιρήξαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐκέλευον ῥαβδίζειν,
23After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was ordered to guard them securely.
πολλάς ⸀τε ἐπιθέντες αὐτοῖς πληγὰς ἔβαλον εἰς φυλακήν, παραγγείλαντες τῷ δεσμοφύλακι ἀσφαλῶς τηρεῖν αὐτούς·
24On receiving these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
ὃς παραγγελίαν τοιαύτην ⸀λαβὼν ἔβαλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἐσωτέραν φυλακὴν καὶ τοὺς πόδας ⸂ἠσφαλίσατο αὐτῶν⸃ εἰς τὸ ξύλον.
25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
Κατὰ δὲ τὸ μεσονύκτιον Παῦλος καὶ Σιλᾶς προσευχόμενοι ὕμνουν τὸν θεόν, ἐπηκροῶντο δὲ αὐτῶν οἱ δέσμιοι·
26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.
ἄφνω δὲ σεισμὸς ἐγένετο μέγας ὥστε σαλευθῆναι τὰ θεμέλια τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου, ἠνεῴχθησαν ⸀δὲ παραχρῆμα αἱ θύραι πᾶσαι, καὶ πάντων τὰ δεσμὰ ἀνέθη.
27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors standing open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had escaped.
ἔξυπνος δὲ γενόμενος ὁ δεσμοφύλαξ καὶ ἰδὼν ἀνεῳγμένας τὰς θύρας τῆς φυλακῆς σπασάμενος ⸀τὴν μάχαιραν ἤμελλεν ἑαυτὸν ἀναιρεῖν, νομίζων ἐκπεφευγέναι τοὺς δεσμίους.
28But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
ἐφώνησεν δὲ ⸂φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Παῦλος⸃ λέγων· Μηδὲν πράξῃς σεαυτῷ κακόν, ἅπαντες γάρ ἐσμεν ἐνθάδε.
29The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.
αἰτήσας δὲ φῶτα εἰσεπήδησεν καὶ ἔντρομος γενόμενος προσέπεσεν τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ ⸀τῷ Σιλᾷ,
30He brought them outside and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
καὶ προαγαγὼν αὐτοὺς ἔξω ἔφη· Κύριοι, τί με δεῖ ποιεῖν ἵνα σωθῶ;
31They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."
οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Πίστευσον ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον ⸀Ἰησοῦν, καὶ σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου.
32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.
καὶ ἐλάλησαν αὐτῷ τὸν λόγον τοῦ ⸀κυρίου ⸀σὺν πᾶσι τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ.
33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.
καὶ παραλαβὼν αὐτοὺς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τῆς νυκτὸς ἔλουσεν ἀπὸ τῶν πληγῶν, καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ αὐτοῦ ⸀πάντες παραχρῆμα,
34He brought them up into his house and set a meal before them, and he rejoiced with his whole household that he had come to believe in God.
ἀναγαγών τε αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ⸀οἶκον παρέθηκεν τράπεζαν καὶ ⸀ἠγαλλιάσατο πανοικεὶ πεπιστευκὼς τῷ θεῷ.
35When daylight came, the magistrates sent their officers with the order: "Release those men."
Ἡμέρας δὲ γενομένης ἀπέστειλαν οἱ στρατηγοὶ τοὺς ῥαβδούχους λέγοντες· Ἀπόλυσον τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐκείνους.
36The jailer reported this to Paul: "The magistrates have sent word to release you. So you may leave. Go in peace."
ἀπήγγειλεν δὲ ὁ δεσμοφύλαξ τοὺς λόγους ⸀τούτους πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον, ὅτι Ἀπέσταλκαν οἱ στρατηγοὶ ἵνα ἀπολυθῆτε· νῦν οὖν ἐξελθόντες πορεύεσθε ἐν εἰρήνῃ.
37But Paul said to them, "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? Certainly not! Let them come themselves and escort us out."
ὁ δὲ Παῦλος ἔφη πρὸς αὐτούς· Δείραντες ἡμᾶς δημοσίᾳ ἀκατακρίτους, ἀνθρώπους Ῥωμαίους ὑπάρχοντας, ἔβαλαν εἰς φυλακήν· καὶ νῦν λάθρᾳ ἡμᾶς ἐκβάλλουσιν; οὐ γάρ, ἀλλὰ ἐλθόντες αὐτοὶ ⸀ἡμᾶς ἐξαγαγέτωσαν.
38The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.
⸀ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ τοῖς στρατηγοῖς οἱ ῥαβδοῦχοι τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα· ⸂ἐφοβήθησαν δὲ⸃ ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ῥωμαῖοί εἰσιν,
39So they came and apologized to them, and they escorted them out and begged them to leave the city.
καὶ ἐλθόντες παρεκάλεσαν αὐτούς, καὶ ἐξαγαγόντες ἠρώτων ⸂ἀπελθεῖν ἀπὸ⸃ τῆς πόλεως.
40After leaving the prison, Paul and Silas went to Lydia's house, where they saw the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they departed.
ἐξελθόντες δὲ ⸀ἀπὸ τῆς φυλακῆς εἰσῆλθον πρὸς τὴν Λυδίαν, καὶ ἰδόντες ⸂παρεκάλεσαν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς⸃ καὶ ἐξῆλθαν.
