Paul on head coverings in worship
Paul instructs the church in Corinth on how men and women should behave during prayer and prophecy in worship, especially regarding head coverings. He bases this on the order of creation, what nature teaches, and consideration for angels.
Första Korinthierbrevet 11,3-16
3But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι ὅτι παντὸς ἀνδρὸς ἡ κεφαλὴ ὁ Χριστός ἐστιν, κεφαλὴ δὲ γυναικὸς ὁ ἀνήρ, κεφαλὴ δὲ ⸀τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὁ θεός.
4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,
πᾶς ἀνὴρ προσευχόμενος ἢ προφητεύων κατὰ κεφαλῆς ἔχων καταισχύνει τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ·
5and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as if she were shaved.
πᾶσα δὲ γυνὴ προσευχομένη ἢ προφητεύουσα ἀκατακαλύπτῳ τῇ κεφαλῇ καταισχύνει τὴν κεφαλὴν ⸀αὐτῆς, ἓν γάρ ἐστιν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ τῇ ἐξυρημένῃ.
6If a woman will not cover her head, then let her hair be cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or shaved, let her cover her head.
εἰ γὰρ οὐ κατακαλύπτεται γυνή, καὶ κειράσθω· εἰ δὲ αἰσχρὸν γυναικὶ τὸ κείρασθαι ἢ ξυρᾶσθαι, κατακαλυπτέσθω.
7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
ἀνὴρ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ὀφείλει κατακαλύπτεσθαι τὴν κεφαλήν, εἰκὼν καὶ δόξα θεοῦ ὑπάρχων· ⸀ἡ γυνὴ δὲ δόξα ἀνδρός ἐστιν.
8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἀνὴρ ἐκ γυναικός, ἀλλὰ γυνὴ ἐξ ἀνδρός·
9nor was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man.
καὶ γὰρ οὐκ ἐκτίσθη ἀνὴρ διὰ τὴν γυναῖκα, ἀλλὰ γυνὴ διὰ τὸν ἄνδρα.
10This is why a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
διὰ τοῦτο ὀφείλει ἡ γυνὴ ἐξουσίαν ἔχειν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς διὰ τοὺς ἀγγέλους.
11Yet in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor man of woman.
πλὴν οὔτε ⸂γυνὴ χωρὶς ἀνδρὸς οὔτε ἀνὴρ χωρὶς γυναικὸς⸃ ἐν κυρίῳ·
12For as woman came from man, so man is born through woman; and all things come from God.
ὥσπερ γὰρ ἡ γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρός, οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ διὰ τῆς γυναικός· τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ.
13Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
ἐν ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς κρίνατε· πρέπον ἐστὶν γυναῖκα ἀκατακάλυπτον τῷ θεῷ προσεύχεσθαι;
14Doesn't nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a dishonor to him,
⸀οὐδὲ ⸂ἡ φύσις αὐτὴ⸃ διδάσκει ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἀνὴρ μὲν ἐὰν κομᾷ, ἀτιμία αὐτῷ ἐστιν,
15but if a woman has long hair it is her glory? For her hair was given her as a covering.
γυνὴ δὲ ἐὰν κομᾷ, δόξα αὐτῇ ἐστιν; ὅτι ἡ κόμη ἀντὶ περιβολαίου ⸀δέδοται.
16If anyone wants to argue about this, we have no such practice—nor do the churches of God.
εἰ δέ τις δοκεῖ φιλόνεικος εἶναι, ἡμεῖς τοιαύτην συνήθειαν οὐκ ἔχομεν, οὐδὲ αἱ ἐκκλησίαι τοῦ θεοῦ.
