Peter defends the conversion of the Gentiles
Peter goes up to Jerusalem and is confronted by the circumcised for having entered and eaten with uncircumcised men. He explains in order the vision in Joppa with the sheet lowered from heaven containing all kinds of animals, and the voice that said what God has cleansed should not be called unclean. He tells about the three men from Caesarea, about the angel the man had seen, and how the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles while he was speaking, just as it did on the apostles at the beginning. When they heard this, they were silent, praised God, and acknowledged that God had also given the Gentiles repentance unto life.
Apostlagärningarna 11,1-18
1The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles too had received the word of God.
Ἤκουσαν δὲ οἱ ἀπόστολοι καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ οἱ ὄντες κατὰ τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ὅτι καὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἐδέξαντο τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ.
2So when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision took issue with him,
⸂ὅτε δὲ⸃ ἀνέβη Πέτρος εἰς ⸀Ἰερουσαλήμ, διεκρίνοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς
3saying, "You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them."
λέγοντες ὅτι ⸂Εἰσῆλθες πρὸς ἄνδρας ἀκροβυστίαν ἔχοντας καὶ συνέφαγες⸃ αὐτοῖς.
4Then Peter began and laid the matter out for them step by step:
ἀρξάμενος ⸀δὲ Πέτρος ἐξετίθετο αὐτοῖς καθεξῆς λέγων·
5"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: something like a large sheet was coming down, lowered from heaven by its four corners, and it came right down to me.
Ἐγὼ ἤμην ἐν πόλει Ἰόππῃ προσευχόμενος καὶ εἶδον ἐν ἐκστάσει ὅραμα, καταβαῖνον σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς καθιεμένην ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἦλθεν ἄχρι ἐμοῦ·
6I looked into it closely and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the air.
εἰς ἣν ἀτενίσας κατενόουν καὶ εἶδον τὰ τετράποδα τῆς γῆς καὶ τὰ θηρία καὶ τὰ ἑρπετὰ καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ·
7And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.'
ἤκουσα δὲ ⸀καὶ φωνῆς λεγούσης μοι· Ἀναστάς, Πέτρε, θῦσον καὶ φάγε.
8But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'
εἶπον δέ· Μηδαμῶς, κύριε, ⸀ὅτι κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον οὐδέποτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ στόμα μου.
9The voice answered a second time from heaven, 'What God has cleansed, you must not call common.'
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ⸂φωνὴ ἐκ δευτέρου⸃ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· Ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου.
10This happened three times, and then everything was drawn back up into heaven.
τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς, καὶ ⸂ἀνεσπάσθη πάλιν⸃ ἅπαντα εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν.
11And at that very moment three men arrived at the house where we were staying, sent to me from Caesarea.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξαυτῆς τρεῖς ἄνδρες ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐν ᾗ ⸀ἦμεν, ἀπεσταλμένοι ἀπὸ Καισαρείας πρός με.
12The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitating. These six brothers came with me as well, and we entered the man's house.
εἶπεν δὲ ⸂τὸ πνεῦμά μοι⸃ συνελθεῖν αὐτοῖς μηδὲν ⸀διακρίναντα. ἦλθον δὲ σὺν ἐμοὶ καὶ οἱ ἓξ ἀδελφοὶ οὗτοι, καὶ εἰσήλθομεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀνδρός.
13He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and summon Simon who is called Peter;
ἀπήγγειλεν ⸀δὲ ἡμῖν πῶς εἶδεν τὸν ἄγγελον ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ σταθέντα καὶ ⸀εἰπόντα· Ἀπόστειλον εἰς ⸀Ἰόππην καὶ μετάπεμψαι Σίμωνα τὸν ἐπικαλούμενον Πέτρον,
14he will speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and your whole household.'
ὃς λαλήσει ῥήματα πρὸς σὲ ἐν οἷς σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκός σου.
15As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he had on us at the beginning.
ἐν δὲ τῷ ἄρξασθαί με λαλεῖν ἐπέπεσεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ὥσπερ καὶ ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ἐν ἀρχῇ.
16Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
ἐμνήσθην δὲ τοῦ ῥήματος ⸀τοῦ κυρίου ὡς ἔλεγεν· Ἰωάννης μὲν ἐβάπτισεν ὕδατι, ὑμεῖς δὲ βαπτισθήσεσθε ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.
17So if God gave them the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way?"
εἰ οὖν τὴν ἴσην δωρεὰν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ὡς καὶ ἡμῖν πιστεύσασιν ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, ⸀ἐγὼ τίς ἤμην δυνατὸς κωλῦσαι τὸν θεόν;
18When they heard this, they fell silent, and they glorified God, saying, "So then, God has granted even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."
ἀκούσαντες δὲ ταῦτα ἡσύχασαν καὶ ⸀ἐδόξασαν τὸν θεὸν λέγοντες· ⸀Ἄρα καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ὁ θεὸς τὴν μετάνοιαν ⸂εἰς ζωὴν ἔδωκεν⸃.
