The Prophecy of Return and Restoration

The Lord commands Jeremiah to write down the prophecy that He will turn the fate of Israel and Judah and bring them back to their land. After a time of distress for Jacob, the Lord will break the yoke and chains, and the people will serve the Lord and a king from David's line. Even though the wound is deep because of sin, God promises to heal Zion, rebuild the city, and renew the covenant: "You shall be my people, and I will be your God."

Jeremia 30,1-24

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
2This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write in a book every word I have spoken to you.
3For the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel and Judah, says the LORD, and bring them back to the land I gave their fathers, and they will take possession of it.
4These are the words the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah:
5This is what the LORD says: We have heard a cry of terror—panic, and no peace.
6Ask now and see: can a man give birth? Why then do I see every warrior with his hands on his belly like a woman in labor, and every face turned deathly pale?
7How dreadful that day will be! There has never been one like it. It is a time of distress for Jacob, yet he will be saved out of it.
8On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will break the yoke from your neck and tear off your bonds, and strangers will no longer make you their slave.
9They will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
10So do not be afraid, my servant Jacob; do not be dismayed, Israel, declares the LORD. For I will surely save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob will come back and live in quiet and safety, and no one will make him afraid.
11For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD. I will make an end of all the nations among which I scattered you, but you I will not destroy. I will discipline you with justice; I will by no means leave you unpunished.
12For this is what the LORD says: Your wound is incurable, your injury beyond healing.
13There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no cure for you.
14All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer look for you. I have struck you as an enemy strikes, with the discipline of the merciless, because your guilt is so great and your sins so many.
15Why do you cry out over your wound, over pain that has no cure? Because your guilt is so great and your sins so many, I have done this to you.
16But all who devour you will be devoured; all your enemies will go into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered; all who prey on you I will make prey.
17I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the LORD, because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.
18This is what the LORD says: I will restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings. The city will be rebuilt on its ruins, and the palace will stand in its rightful place.
19From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of laughter. I will make them many, not few; I will bring them honor, and they will not be despised.
20His children will be as in days of old, and his community will stand firm before me. I will punish all who oppress him.
21Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will come from among them. I will bring him near, and he will approach me—for who on his own would dare to draw near to me? declares the LORD.
22You will be my people, and I will be your God.
23See, the storm of the LORD bursts out in fury, a whirling tempest that breaks over the heads of the wicked.
24The LORD's burning anger will not turn back until he has accomplished the purpose of his heart. In days to come you will understand this.
