Samuel Leads Israel's Repentance and Victory at Mizpah
Samuel calls Israel to turn away from foreign gods and gathers the people at Mizpah, where they fast and confess their sins. When the Philistines attack, Samuel sacrifices a nursing lamb and cries out to the Lord, who responds with powerful thunder that causes confusion among the Philistines. Israel pursues and defeats them all the way to Beth-car. Samuel sets up a stone he calls Eben-ezer ("Thus far has the Lord helped us"), and the Philistines are humbled as long as Samuel lives.
Första Samuelsboken 7,3-14
3Then Samuel said to the whole house of Israel, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, get rid of the foreign gods among you, and the Ashtaroth as well. Set your hearts on the LORD and serve him alone, and he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines."
4So the Israelites got rid of the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the LORD alone.
5Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you."
6So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the LORD. They fasted that day, and there they confessed, "We have sinned against the LORD." And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.
7When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, the Philistine rulers marched up against Israel. And when the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8They said to Samuel, "Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines."
9So Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it whole as a burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on Israel's behalf, and the LORD answered him.
10As Samuel was offering the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel. But that day the LORD thundered against the Philistines with a mighty voice and threw them into panic, and they were routed before Israel.
11The men of Israel charged out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, striking them down as far as below Beth-car.
12Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and he named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us." [Footnote: Ebenezer means "stone of help."]
13So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade the territory of Israel again. The hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14The towns the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath, and Israel also recovered the territory around them from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
