Jesus Teaches About Divorce and Eunuchs
Pharisees put Jesus to the test with a question about divorce. Jesus points to the Creator's original plan: man and woman shall be one flesh, and what God has joined together must not be separated. He explains that Moses permitted divorce because of people's hard hearts, but says that anyone who divorces for any reason other than sexual immorality and marries another commits adultery. When the disciples react, Jesus speaks about three kinds of eunuchs, including those who make themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
Matteusevangeliet 19,3-12
3Some Pharisees came to test him. "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" they asked.
Καὶ προσῆλθον ⸀αὐτῷ Φαρισαῖοι πειράζοντες αὐτὸν καὶ ⸀λέγοντες· Εἰ ἔξεστιν ⸀ἀνθρώπῳ ἀπολῦσαι τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ κατὰ πᾶσαν αἰτίαν;
4He answered, "Haven't you read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female,
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ⸀εἶπεν· Οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι ὁ ⸀κτίσας ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτοὺς
5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?
καὶ εἶπεν· ⸀Ἕνεκα τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ ⸀κολληθήσεται τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν;
6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
ὥστε οὐκέτι εἰσὶν δύο ἀλλὰ σὰρξ μία. ὃ οὖν ὁ θεὸς συνέζευξεν ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω.
7They said to him, "Why then did Moses command a man to give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"
λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Τί οὖν Μωϋσῆς ἐνετείλατο δοῦναι βιβλίον ἀποστασίου καὶ ἀπολῦσαι ⸀αὐτήν;
8He said to them, "Because your hearts were hard, Moses permitted you to divorce your wives. But it was not this way from the beginning.
λέγει αὐτοῖς ὅτι Μωϋσῆς πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν ἐπέτρεψεν ὑμῖν ἀπολῦσαι τὰς γυναῖκας ὑμῶν, ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς δὲ οὐ γέγονεν οὕτως.
9And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ⸀ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπὶ πορνείᾳ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην μοιχᾶται ⸂καὶ ὁ ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσας μοιχᾶται⸃.
10The disciples said to him, "If this is how it is between a man and his wife, it is better not to marry."
Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ ⸀μαθηταί· Εἰ οὕτως ἐστὶν ἡ αἰτία τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός, οὐ συμφέρει γαμῆσαι.
11He replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Οὐ πάντες χωροῦσι τὸν λόγον ⸀τοῦτον ἀλλʼ οἷς δέδοται.
12For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who were made so by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."
εἰσὶν γὰρ εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς ἐγεννήθησαν οὕτως, καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνουχίσθησαν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνούχισαν ἑαυτοὺς διὰ τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν. ὁ δυνάμενος χωρεῖν χωρείτω.
