The Vision of the New Temple
In the 25th year after the exile, the prophet Ezekiel receives a vision in which he is brought to the land of Israel and up on a high mountain. A man who looks like bronze, with a measuring rod in his hand, leads him through a future temple complex and measures everything precisely: the gates facing east, north, and south with guardrooms and vestibules, the outer and inner courts, the rooms where sacrifices are slaughtered, the priests' chambers, the temple hall itself with the Most Holy Place, side chambers with carved cherubim and palm trees, and the altar. Finally, the wall around the entire area is measured, which will separate the holy from the common.
Hesekiel 40,1-42,20
1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck down—on that very day the hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me there.
2In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel and set me down on a very high mountain, and on it, to the south, there was what looked like the structure of a city.
3He brought me there, and there stood a man whose appearance was like bronze. In his hand were a linen cord and a measuring rod, and he was standing in the gateway.
4The man said to me, "Son of man, look with your eyes and listen with your ears, and fix your mind on everything I show you, for you have been brought here so that it may be shown to you. Tell the house of Israel all that you see."
5And there was a wall surrounding the temple area on the outside. In the man's hand was a measuring rod six cubits long, each cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth. He measured the thickness of the wall: one rod; and its height: one rod.
6Then he went to the gate that faces east and climbed its steps. He measured the threshold of the gate: one rod deep; and the other threshold: one rod deep.
7Each guardroom was one rod long and one rod wide, and between the guardrooms was a span of five cubits. The threshold of the gate, next to the vestibule of the gate on the inner side, was one rod.
8He measured the vestibule of the gate on the inner side: one rod.
9Then he measured the vestibule of the gate: eight cubits; and its jambs: two cubits. The vestibule of the gate was at the inner end.
10The guardrooms of the east gate were three on one side and three on the other, all three of the same measure; and the jambs on either side had the same measure.
11He measured the width of the gate's entrance: ten cubits; and the length of the gateway: thirteen cubits.
12In front of the guardrooms was a barrier one cubit high on one side and a barrier one cubit high on the other, and each guardroom was six cubits on one side and six cubits on the other.
13Then he measured the gateway from the roof of one guardroom to the roof of the opposite one: twenty-five cubits wide, doorway facing doorway.
14He made the jambs sixty cubits high, and the court reached to the jambs all around the gateway.
15From the front of the outer entrance of the gate to the front of the vestibule of the inner gate was fifty cubits.
16The guardrooms and their jambs had recessed windows all around the inside of the gateway, and so did the vestibules. There were windows all around on the inside, and palm trees were carved on the jambs.
17Then he brought me into the outer court, and there were chambers and a pavement laid out all around the court; thirty chambers faced the pavement.
18The pavement ran alongside the gateways, corresponding to their length; this was the lower pavement.
19He measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the outer front of the inner court: a hundred cubits, on the east and on the north.
20He also measured the length and width of the gate of the outer court that faces north.
21Its guardrooms were three on one side and three on the other, and its jambs and its porch had the same measurements as the first gate: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
22Its windows, its porch, and its palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, and its porch was at the inner end.
23Opposite the north gate, as with the east gate, there was a gate to the inner court; he measured from gate to gate: a hundred cubits.
24Then he led me toward the south, and there was a gate facing south. He measured its jambs and its porch; they had the same measurements as the others.
25It and its porch had windows all around, like the other windows: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
26Seven steps led up to it, and its porch was at the inner end; it had palm trees on its jambs, one on each side.
27The inner court also had a gate facing south, and he measured from gate to gate toward the south: a hundred cubits.
28Then he brought me into the inner court through the south gate, and he measured the south gate; it had the same measurements as the others.
29Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porch had the same measurements, and it and its porch had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
30There were porches all around, twenty-five cubits long and five cubits wide.
31Its porch faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs; eight steps led up to it.
32Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side, and he measured the gate; it had the same measurements as the others.
33Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its vestibule had the same measurements, and it and its vestibule had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
34Its porch faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs, on both sides; eight steps led up to it.
35Then he brought me to the north gate and measured it; it had the same measurements as the others,
36with its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porch, and it had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
37Its vestibule faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs, on both sides; eight steps led up to it.
38There was a chamber with its doorway by the jambs of the gateways; there the burnt offering was rinsed.
39In the vestibule of the gateway there were two tables on one side and two tables on the other, on which the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering were slaughtered.
40Outside, on the side wall as one goes up to the entrance of the north gateway, were two tables; and on the other side wall, by the vestibule of the gateway, were two more tables.
41So there were four tables on one side of the gateway and four tables on the other—eight tables in all, on which the sacrifices were slaughtered.
42There were also four tables of dressed stone for the burnt offering, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit high; on them were laid the instruments used to slaughter the burnt offering and the other sacrifices.
43Double hooks, a handbreadth long, were fastened all around inside, and the flesh of the offering was laid on the tables.
44Outside the inner gate, in the inner court, were chambers for the singers: one beside the north gate, facing south, and one beside the east gate, facing north.
45He said to me, "This chamber that faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple,
46and the chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, who alone of the sons of Levi may draw near to the LORD to serve him."
47Then he measured the court: a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits wide, a perfect square; and the altar stood in front of the temple.
48He brought me to the vestibule of the temple and measured the jambs of the vestibule: five cubits on one side and five cubits on the other; and the width of the gateway was three cubits on one side and three cubits on the other.
49The vestibule was twenty cubits long and eleven cubits wide, and it was reached by steps; and there were pillars by the jambs, one on each side.
1Then he brought me to the nave and measured the pilasters: six cubits wide on one side and six cubits wide on the other — the width of the tent.
2The entrance was ten cubits wide, and the walls flanking the entrance were five cubits on one side and five cubits on the other. He measured the length of the nave: forty cubits, and its width: twenty cubits.
3Then he went farther in and measured the pilaster of the doorway: two cubits; the doorway itself: six cubits; and the width of the doorway: seven cubits.
4He measured its length: twenty cubits, and its width: twenty cubits, across from the nave. And he said to me, "This is the Most Holy Place."
5Then he measured the wall of the temple: six cubits thick. The width of each side chamber all around the temple was four cubits.
6The side chambers were arranged one above another, three tiers with thirty chambers in each. There were ledges in the temple wall all around, on which the side chambers rested, so they were not fastened into the wall of the temple itself.
7The side chambers grew wider as they rose from story to story, because the surrounding structure of the temple ascended stage by stage all around it; therefore the width of the building increased as it went up. So one climbed from the lowest story to the highest by way of the middle one.
8I also saw that the temple had a raised platform all around it, the foundations of the side chambers: a full rod, six long cubits.
9The outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits thick. The open area between the side chambers of the temple
10and the outer chambers was twenty cubits wide, all around the temple on every side.
11The side chambers opened onto the open area: one entrance on the north and one on the south. The open area was five cubits wide all around.
12The building facing the restricted area on the west side was seventy cubits wide; the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.
13Then he measured the temple: a hundred cubits long. The courtyard, together with the building and its walls, was also a hundred cubits long.
14The width of the temple front, including the courtyard on the east, was a hundred cubits.
15He measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, along with its galleries on either side: a hundred cubits. He measured the inner nave and the vestibules of the court,
16the thresholds, the recessed windows, and the galleries all around the three of them. From the threshold up, everything was paneled with wood all around, and from the floor to the windows — the windows being covered —
17The paneling reached above the entrance, as far as the inner room, and outside as well. On every wall all around, inside and out, there were carvings by measure:
18cherubim and palm trees, a palm tree between each pair of cherubim. Each cherub had two faces:
19the face of a man toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved throughout the temple, all around.
20From the floor to the space above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the nave.
21The doorposts of the nave were square. In front of the sanctuary stood something that looked like
22an altar of wood, three cubits high and two cubits long, with its corners, its base, and its sides all of wood.* And he said to me, "This is the table that stands before the LORD." [*Footnote: The Hebrew here reads "its length and its walls were wood"; "its base" follows the ancient Greek reading.]
23The nave and the sanctuary each had a double door,
24and each door had two swinging leaves — two leaves for the one door and two for the other.
25On the doors of the nave were carved cherubim and palm trees, like those carved on the walls. And there was a wooden canopy over the front of the vestibule, on the outside.
26There were recessed windows and palm trees on either side, on the sidewalls of the vestibule; and so also on the side chambers of the temple and on the canopies.
1Then he led me out to the outer court, toward the north, and brought me to the chambers that face the open area and the building on the north side.
2Along the north side its length was a hundred cubits, where the entrance was, and its width fifty cubits.
3Opposite the twenty cubits belonging to the inner court, and facing the pavement of the outer court, there was gallery upon gallery in three tiers.
4In front of the chambers ran a walkway ten cubits wide, leading inward by a passage one cubit wide, and their entrances faced north.
5The upper chambers were shorter, because the galleries took space from them, more than from the lower and middle stories of the building.
6For they were in three tiers and had no pillars like the pillars of the courts; therefore the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and middle ones.
7There was an outer wall running alongside the chambers, toward the outer court, in front of the chambers; its length was fifty cubits.
8For the chambers on the outer court were fifty cubits long, while those facing the temple were a hundred cubits.
9Below these chambers was the entryway from the east, where one enters them from the outer court.
10Along the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, facing the open area and the building, there were chambers,
11with a walkway in front of them. They looked like the chambers on the north side: the same length and width, the same exits, the same arrangements, and the same doorways.
12Like the doorways of the chambers on the south, there was a doorway at the head of the walkway—the walkway in front of the corresponding wall—on the east side, where one enters them.
13Then he said to me, "The north chambers and the south chambers that face the open area are the holy chambers, where the priests who draw near to the LORD shall eat the most holy offerings. There they shall lay the most holy offerings—the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering—for the place is holy.
14When the priests enter, they shall not go out from the holy place into the outer court without leaving there the garments in which they minister, for these are holy. They shall put on other garments before approaching the area open to the people."
15When he had finished measuring the interior of the temple area, he led me out by the gate that faces east and measured the whole area all around.
16He measured the east side with the measuring rod: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
17He measured the north side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
18He measured the south side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
19Then he turned to the west side and measured five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
20So he measured it on all four sides. It had a wall all around it, five hundred rods long and five hundred wide, to separate the holy from the common.
