Comfort for Jerusalem concerning the cup of drunkenness
Jerusalem, having drunk the cup of the Lord's wrath to the last drop, is comforted with the promise that the cup will be taken from her and given to her oppressors. God promises to remove sorrow and grant freedom to those who lay helpless, and to restore the people as His own Isaiah 51:17-23.
Jesaja 51,17-23
17Rouse yourself, rouse yourself! Stand up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the LORD's hand the cup of his wrath, who have drained to the dregs the goblet that makes people stagger.
18Of all the sons she bore, there is none to guide her; of all the sons she raised, there is none to take her by the hand.
19These two things have come upon you—who will grieve for you?—ruin and destruction, famine and sword. Who will comfort you?
20Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street like an antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the wrath of the LORD, with the rebuke of your God.
21Therefore hear this, you afflicted one, you who are drunk—but not with wine.
22This is what your Lord says, the LORD, your God, who defends his people: See, I have taken from your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that goblet, the cup of my wrath, you will never drink again.
23I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you, "Lie down, that we may walk over you"—and you made your back like the ground, like a street for them to cross.
