Woe to you, Pharisees and experts in the law
During a meal at a Pharisee's house, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and legal experts with several woes. He accuses them of cleaning only the outside while the inside is full of greed, of tithing on herbs but neglecting justice and love for God, of loving places of honor, of being like unmarked graves, of loading people with heavy burdens without lifting a finger themselves, of building tombs for the prophets whom their ancestors killed, and of taking away the key to knowledge. Afterward, the scribes and Pharisees begin to press him hard to catch him in his words. Luke 11:37-54
Lukasevangeliet 11,37-54
37As he was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at the table.
38The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before the meal.
39But the Lord said to him, "You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside as well?
ἄφρονες, οὐχ ὁ ποιήσας τὸ ἔξωθεν καὶ τὸ ἔσωθεν ἐποίησεν;
41But give as alms what is within, and behold, everything is clean for you.
42But woe to you Pharisees! You tithe mint and rue and every herb, yet you neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
43Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
44Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it."
45One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too."
46He said, "Woe to you experts in the law as well! You load people down with burdens hard to carry, and you yourselves do not lift a finger to touch those burdens.
47Woe to you! You build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.
48So you are witnesses who approve of what your fathers did: they killed them, and you build their tombs.
49For this reason the wisdom of God said: 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,'
50so that this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world,
51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable.
52Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering."
53As he went out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to interrogate him about many things,
54lying in wait to catch him in something he might say.
