Waiting, Spiritism, and the Judgment of Darkness
The prophet seals the testimony among the disciples and places his hope in the Lord who hides His face from the house of Jacob. He warns against seeking counsel from spiritists and mediums instead of God, and urges the people back to the law and the testimony. He describes a future of hunger, distress, and thick darkness for those who curse their king and their God, but concludes with the promise that the darkness will not last forever: in the land of Zebulun and Naphtali, Galilee of the Gentiles, glory shall come instead of shame Isaiah 8:16-23.
Jesaja 8,16-23
16Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples.
17I will wait for the LORD, who hides his face from the house of Jacob; in him I will hope.
18Here I am, and the children the LORD has given me — we are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
19And when they tell you to consult the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter — should not a people consult its God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
20To the teaching and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there is no dawn for them.
21They will pass through the land, hard-pressed and hungry; and when they are famished they will rage and curse their king and their god. They will turn their faces upward,
22and they will look to the earth — but there is only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and they will be thrust into thick darkness.
23But there will be no gloom for the land that was in anguish. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will bring glory to the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
