Ahitub belonged to the priestly lineage from Eli and was the son of Phinehas, who fell in battle against the Philistines when the ark of the covenant was captured. He was the brother of Ichabod, whose name testifies to the national crisis that struck Israel when God's glory departed from the sanctuary at Shiloh. Despite the catastrophe that befell his family – the loss of his father, grandfather, and the ark of the covenant – Ahitub continued the priestly tradition. He is regarded as the father of Abiathar, who wore the ephod in King Saul's service, and is also linked to Ahimelech, the priest at Nob, although it is debated whether Abiathar and Ahimelech were the same person or father and son. Ahitub thus appears as an important link in the priestly lineage that was eventually removed under Solomon in favor of Zadok, fulfilling the prophecy against the house of Eli. His name also appears in the priestly genealogies in Chronicles and in Ezra's genealogy, but there are several biblical figures with this name, making it challenging to distinguish them from one another.
Ahitub was the son of Phinehas and the grandson of Eli, the high priest who served at the tabernacle in Shiloh. He belonged to a priestly family that had responsibility for God's sanctuary.
3Among them was Ahijah son of Ahitub, the brother of Ichabod son of Phinehas son of Eli, the LORD's priest at Shiloh; he was wearing the ephod. No one knew that Jonathan had gone.
Ahitub's father Phinehas died in the battle where the ark of the covenant was captured by the Philistines. Upon hearing this news, Phinehas' wife gave birth to a son named Ichabod, Ahitub's brother, and she named him because 'the glory has departed from Israel.' This crisis marked a turning point for the priestly lineage.
17The messenger answered, "Israel fled before the Philistines. There was a great slaughter among the troops. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."
19His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of birth. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, for her pains came upon her.
21She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel"—because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
Ahitub's son Ahijah served as a priest and carried the ephod during King Saul's reign, showing that the priestly line continued through Ahitub despite the crisis at Shiloh.

18Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God here"—for at that time the ark of God was with the Israelites. [Footnote: Some ancient witnesses read "ephod" instead of "ark of God," which fits the reference to Ahijah's ephod in verse 3 and Saul's words in verse 19.]
Ahimelech, described as the son of Ahitub, was the priest in Nob who gave David the showbread and Goliath's sword. Whether Ahimelech was identical to Ahijah or his son is debated. The event led Saul to kill the priests in Nob, a tragedy that severely impacted Eli's lineage.
Ahitub is mentioned in the priestly genealogies in 1 Chronicles. There are several individuals named Ahitub in these lists, and scholars debate whether all references refer to the same person.
