Amashsai

Priest in Jerusalem after the exile

Även känd som: Amassai, Amashai

ÅterkomstenPriestc. 500 B.C.E.

Amashai was a priest of the family of Immer who settled in Jerusalem after returning from the Babylonian exile. He is mentioned in Neh 11:13 with the lineage Asareel, Achai, and Meshillemoth, which traces back to the priestly family of Immer – one of the 24 priestly divisions established under David. As part of the priestly restoration in Jerusalem, he took part in restoring temple worship, a central task in the post-exilic period. In the parallel genealogy in 1 Chr 9:12, the name form Maasai appears in the corresponding position, which likely refers to the same person or family tradition.

Settled among the priests in Jerusalem

Amashsai is listed among the priests who settled in Jerusalem after returning from Babylon. He was the son of Azarel, son of Achai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, and thus belonged to one of the prominent priestly families that resumed service in the temple.

Service in the rebuilt temple

As a priest connected to Immer's priestly division, Amashsai served in worship at God's house in Jerusalem. He was part of a broader group of priests listed in Nehemiah's record of those who settled in the city to maintain the restored temple service.

Parallel in Chronicles

A parallel genealogy in 1 Chronicles mentions Maasai in a similar position within Immer's lineage. Most scholars regard this as a reference to the same person or tradition, with the name variation due to different transmission lines.
