Arkippus

Fellow Worker and Church Servant in Colosse

Den tidiga kyrkanFellow workerChurch servantc. 1st century AD

Archippus was a Christian coworker who held an important service role in the church at Colossae. Paul refers to him as "our fellow soldier" (Greek: systratiōtēs, literally "fellow soldier") in the greeting of the letter to Philemon, where he is mentioned together with Philemon and Apphia. Tradition has assumed that the three belonged to the same household, but this is not directly confirmed by the biblical text. In Colossians, Paul gives a reminder through the church to Archippus to see that he completes the service (diakonia) he has received in the Lord – an exhortation that testifies to his bearing significant responsibility in the local Christian community, possibly in connection with Epaphras' absence.

Mentioned as a Fellow Worker

Paul greets Arkippus in the letter to Philemon and calls him 'our fellow worker,' indicating his active role in advancing the gospel and fighting for the faith alongside Paul.

2to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets in your house:
καὶ Ἀπφίᾳ τῇ ⸀ἀδελφῇ καὶ Ἀρχίππῳ τῷ συστρατιώτῃ ἡμῶν καὶ τῇ κατʼ οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησίᾳ·

Exhortation to Complete the Service

In Colossians, Paul urges the church to tell Arkippus to make sure he completes the service (diakonia) he has received in the Lord. This suggests that Arkippus had been given a specific assignment or calling that required faithful perseverance.

17And tell Archippus: "See to the ministry you have received in the Lord, and complete it."
καὶ εἴπατε Ἀρχίππῳ· Βλέπε τὴν διακονίαν ἣν παρέλαβες ἐν κυρίῳ, ἵνα αὐτὴν πληροῖς.

Part of the House Church in Colosse

Arkippus is mentioned together with Philemon and Apphia in connection with the house church that gathered in Philemon's home in Colossae, which suggests that he held a central place in this fellowship.
