Asarela (also called Jesarela) was a son of the music leader Asaf and belonged to the tribe of Levi. He was one of the singers and musicians in the organized worship service that King David established. The musical service is described in Chronicles as a form of prophetic activity, where the singers prophesied with harps, lyres, and cymbals under the king's supervision. David organized 24 divisions of singers in preparation for the temple that Solomon would later build. By lot, Jesarela – who is identical to Asarela – was assigned the seventh division, together with twelve relatives. This prophetic musical service emphasizes that singing and worship in Israelite religion were not merely aesthetic expression but were understood as spiritually inspired proclamation before God's face.

Appointment to Prophetic Musical Service

Asarela was appointed as one of Asaph's sons to prophesy with harps, lyres, and cymbals in the worship service. He served under the direct leadership of his father Asaph, who in turn was under the king's supervision.

1David and the commanders of the army set apart for service the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals. This was the number of the men who did this work according to their service:
2Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah, sons of Asaph, under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied at the king's command.
