Defeated the Egyptian giant

Benaiah killed an impressive Egyptian warrior by snatching the spear from his hand and killing him with his own weapon.

21He also struck down an imposing Egyptian. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went against him with a club, wrenched the spear from the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own spear.

Leader of David's bodyguard

David placed Benaiah over his bodyguard, the Kerethites and Pelethites, showing the great trust the king had in him.

18Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's sons were priests.[^1] [^1]: David's sons were not Levites; the term here likely denotes chief officials or royal advisers serving at the king's side.

23Joab was over the whole army of Israel; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and the Pelethites;

Anointed Solomon as king

Benaiah was present when Solomon was anointed king at the Gihon spring and supported him against Adonijah's attempt to seize the throne.

32King David said, "Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada." When they came before the king,
33he said to them, "Take your lord's servants with you, set my son Solomon on my own mule, and escort him down to Gihon.
34There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and shout, 'Long live King Solomon!'
38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down, set Solomon on King David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet, and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!"
44The king sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they set him on the king's mule.

Executed Solomon's enemies

At Solomon's command, Benaiah executed Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei to secure the kingdom and was then appointed commander of the army in Joab's place.

25So King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck Adonijah down, and he died.
29King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was there beside the altar. So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada with the order, "Go, strike him down."
30Benaiah came to the tent of the LORD and said to Joab, "The king says, 'Come out!'" But he answered, "No, I will die here." Benaiah brought word back to the king: "This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me."
31The king said to him, "Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so remove from me and from my father's house the innocent blood that Joab shed.
34So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck Joab down, and put him to death; and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness.
35The king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and he put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.
46Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was firmly established in Solomon's hand.
