The Sorcerer of Cyprus

Den tidiga kyrkan1st century AD

Served the proconsul of Cyprus

Elymas served as an advisor and sorcerer to the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus and held influence at his court.

6They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish magician and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
7who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.

Opposed the preaching of the gospel

When Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's word from Paul and Barnabas, Elymas actively tried to prevent the proconsul from coming to faith.

7who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.
8But Elymas the magician—for that is what his name means—opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

Paul rebukes Elymas

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul confronted Elymas directly, calling him a son of the devil and an enemy of all righteousness who twists the Lord's right ways.

9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at him
10and said, "You are full of every kind of deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right! Will you never stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?
εἶπεν· Ὦ πλήρης παντὸς δόλου καὶ πάσης ῥᾳδιουργίας, υἱὲ διαβόλου, ἐχθρὲ πάσης δικαιοσύνης, οὐ παύσῃ διαστρέφων τὰς ⸀ὁδοὺς κυρίου τὰς εὐθείας;

Struck with blindness

As God's judgment against his resistance, Elymas was struck with blindness for a time, and he groped around seeking someone to lead him.

11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you. You will be blind, unable to see the sun, for a time." Immediately a mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, looking for someone to lead him by the hand.

The Proconsul's Conversion

When Sergius Paulus saw what happened to Elymas, he believed, amazed at the teaching of the Lord.

12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, astounded at the teaching of the Lord.
