Refused to Let Israel Go

When Moses asked Pharaoh to let the people go, he refused and increased the labor burden on the Israelites.

1Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go, so they may hold a festival for me in the wilderness."
2But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go."
4But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why are you pulling the people away from their work? Get back to your labor!"
5And Pharaoh said, "Look how numerous the people of the land are now, and you would have them stop their labor!"
6That same day Pharaoh gave orders to the slave drivers over the people and to their foremen:
7"You shall no longer supply the people with straw for making bricks, as you did before. Let them go and gather their own straw.
8But require of them the same quota of bricks they made before; do not reduce it. They are lazy—that is why they cry out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'
9Make the work heavier for these men, so they keep at it and pay no attention to lying words."

The Ten Plagues

God sent ten plagues upon Egypt, but Pharaoh hardened his heart again and again.

14Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go.
20Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water in the river turned to blood.
21The fish in the Nile died, the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink its water. There was blood throughout the land of Egypt.
22But the Egyptian magicians did the same thing by their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart grew hard. He would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.
15Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.
19I will make a distinction between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will take place."
7Pharaoh sent men to look, and indeed, not one of Israel's livestock had died. Yet Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he would not let the people go.
12But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had told Moses.
34But when Pharaoh saw that the rain, hail, and thunder had stopped, he sinned again: he and his officials hardened their hearts.
35So Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he would not let the Israelites go, just as the LORD had said through Moses.
20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.
27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was unwilling to let them go.

The Final Plague

After all the firstborn in Egypt died, Pharaoh finally let Israel go.

29At midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, and every firstborn of the livestock.
30Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his officials and all the Egyptians, and there was a great outcry in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.
31He summoned Moses and Aaron that night and said, "Get up, go out from among my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have said.
32Take your flocks and herds as well, just as you said, and go. And bless me too."
33The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country, for they said, "We are all going to die!"

Pursuit and Destruction

Pharaoh regretted it and pursued Israel, but his army drowned in the Red Sea.

5When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials had a change of heart about them and said, "What have we done? We have let Israel go and lost their service!"
6So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and took his army with him.
7He took six hundred of his best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.
8The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.
9The Egyptians pursued them—all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, his horsemen and his troops—and overtook them as they camped by the sea, near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.
23The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and horsemen followed them into the sea.
26Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and horsemen."
27Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians tried to flee from it, but the LORD swept them into the sea.
28The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
