Haran was the son of Terah and the brother of Abraham and Nahor. He is best known as the father of Lot and died in his homeland, Ur of the Chaldees, before the family emigrated to Canaan. His early death in Ur marks a turning point in the family's history.

Haran's Birth and Family
Haran was born as the son of Terah in Ur of the Chaldees. He was the brother of Abram (Abraham) and Nahor.
26After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
וֽ͏ַיְחִי־תֶ֖רַח שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֙וֹלֶד֙ אֶת־אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־הָרָֽן׃
27This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת תֶּ֔רַח תֶּ֚רַח הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־הָרָ֑ן וְהָרָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־לֽוֹט׃
Father of Lot, Milka, and Jiska
Haran became the father of three children: Lot, who later accompanied Abraham; Milka, who married Nahor; and Jiska.
27This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת תֶּ֔רַח תֶּ֚רַח הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־הָרָ֑ן וְהָרָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־לֽוֹט׃
29Abram and Nahor both took wives. Abram's wife was named Sarai, and Nahor's wife was named Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milcah and Iscah.
וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָ֧ם וְנָח֛וֹר לָהֶ֖ם נָשִׁ֑ים שֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־אַבְרָם֙ שָׂרָ֔י וְשֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־נָחוֹר֙ מִלְכָּ֔ה בַּת־הָרָ֥ן אֲבִֽי־מִלְכָּ֖ה וֽ͏ַאֲבִ֥י יִסְכָּֽה׃

Haran died in his homeland, in Ur of the Chaldees, while his father Terah was still alive. He was the first of Terah's sons to die.
