Mentioned in the Genealogy of Judah

Iru is mentioned as the firstborn son of Caleb in the genealogical record of the tribe of Judah.

15The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam. The sons of Elah: Kenaz.

Caleb's Inheritance in Canaan

As a son of Caleb, Iru was part of a family that received an important inheritance in the Promised Land after his father faithfully followed the Lord.

13Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.
14So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

Caleb's Faithfulness and Promise

Caleb's faithfulness to the Lord secured an inheritance for his descendants, including Iru, as he was one of the two spies who trusted in God's promise.

24But my servant Caleb—because a different spirit is in him and he has followed me wholeheartedly—him I will bring into the land he entered, and his descendants will inherit it.
30Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Caleb Takes Hebron

Caleb's conquest of the Hebron area laid the foundation for his family's settlement, which also included Iru and his brothers.

13To Caleb son of Jephunneh, Joshua gave a portion among the people of Judah, as the LORD had commanded him: Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron—Arba being the ancestor of Anak.
14Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.
