Joahaz Becomes King of Israel

Joahaz succeeded his father Jehu as king over Israel and reigned for 17 years in Samaria.

1In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years.

Continued in the Sins of Jeroboam

Joahaz did what was evil in the Lord's sight, following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which caused Israel to sin.

2He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel into sin; he never turned away from them.

The Lord's Anger and Aramean Oppression

The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of Hazael and Ben-Hadad throughout the reign of Jehoahaz.

3So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he handed them over to Hazael king of Aram and to Ben-hadad son of Hazael throughout those days.

Jehoahaz Prays to the Lord

In his distress, Jehoahaz pleaded with the Lord, and the Lord heard him because he saw how the king of Aram was oppressing Israel.

4Then Jehoahaz pleaded with the LORD, and the LORD listened to him, for he saw how Israel was oppressed—how the king of Aram was crushing them.

The Lord Sends a Deliverer

The Lord gave Israel a deliverer so that they were freed from the hand of the Arameans and could live in their homes as before.

5The LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped from the grip of Aram, so that the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before.

Israel's Weakened Army

Jehoahaz was left with only 50 horsemen, 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers because the king of Aram had destroyed them.

7Nothing was left of Jehoahaz's army but fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.
