Jotham was king of Judah and the son of King Uzziah (Azariah). He first ruled as co-regent while his father was afflicted with leprosy, and then as sole king. He did what was right in the Lord's eyes and strengthened Judah militarily and economically, but the people continued their corrupt practices.
21King Uzziah remained a leper until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, a leper, cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.
Jotham waged war against the king of the Ammonites and defeated them. The Ammonites were forced to pay him a substantial annual tribute of silver, wheat, and barley for three years.
5He went to war against the king of the Ammonites and defeated them. That year the Ammonites paid him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. The Ammonites brought him the same tribute in the second and third years as well.
Jotham became powerful because he walked steadfastly before the Lord his God, even though he did not enter the temple of the Lord as his father had done.
