Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz

The Prophet's Symbolic Son

Det delade kungariketServantc. 735 BC

Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz was the second son of the prophet Isaiah. His name, meaning 'Swift to the plunder, quick to the spoil,' served as a prophetic sign that Assyria would soon plunder both Damascus and Samaria. The child's birth and naming acted as a divine confirmation of God's judgment against Syria and Israel.

The Prophecy of the Birth

The Lord commanded Isaiah to write the name 'Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz' on a large tablet with clear handwriting, as a witness to the coming judgment.

1The LORD said to me: Take a large tablet and write on it with an ordinary stylus: "Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz."
2And I took reliable witnesses for myself: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.

The Birth Confirms the Prophecy

The prophetess (Isaiah's wife) became pregnant and gave birth to a son. The Lord commanded that he be named Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.

3Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. And the LORD said to me: Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

The Prophetic Meaning of the Name

Before the boy could say 'father' or 'mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the spoil from Samaria would be carried away to the king of Assyria.

4For before the boy knows how to say "My father" or "My mother," the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried off before the king of Assyria.

Part of Isaiah's Prophetic Signs

Together with his brother Shear-Jashub, Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz was a living sign and wonder in Israel from the Lord, God of hosts.

18Here I am, and the children the LORD has given me — we are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
