Pekahiah (son of Menahem)

Pekahiah was the seventeenth king of the northern kingdom of Israel and reigned for only two years. He followed in his father Menahem’s sinful footsteps by worshiping the golden calves. He was killed in a coup led by his own officer Pekah, who then took the throne.

Becomes king over Israel

Pekahiah became king of Israel in Samaria after his father Menahem’s death, in the fiftieth year of King Azariah’s reign over Judah.

23In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned two years.
בִּשְׁנַת֙ חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה לַעֲזַרְיָ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה מָ֠לַךְ פְּקַֽחְיָ֨ה בֶן־מְנַחֵ֧ם עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּשֹׁמְר֖וֹן שְׁנָתָֽיִם׃ ‬

Pekahiah did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which had caused Israel to sin.

Murdered by Pekah

His own officer, Pekah son of Remaliah, conspired against him and killed him in the royal palace at Samaria, along with Argob and Arieh and fifty men from Gilead.

25Pekah son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him. With fifty men of Gilead he struck him down in Samaria, in the citadel of the royal palace, together with Argob and Arieh. He killed him and became king in his place.
וַיִּקְשֹׁ֣ר עָלָיו֩ פֶּ֨קַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָ֜הוּ שָׁלִישׁ֗וֹ וַיַּכֵּ֨הוּ בְשֹׁמְר֜וֹן בְּאַרְמ֤וֹן בֵּית־*מלך **הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֶת־אַרְגֹּ֣ב וְאֶת־הָאַרְיֵ֔ה וְעִמּ֛וֹ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ מִבְּנֵ֣י גִלְעָדִ֑ים וַיְמִיתֵ֖הוּ וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ ‬

Pekah Takes the Throne

After the murder of Pekahiah, Pekah became king in his place. This marked the end of Menahem's dynasty after only one generation.

וְיֶ֛תֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י פְקַחְיָ֖ה וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה הִנָּ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פ ‬
27In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twenty years.
