The Birth of Shelah

Shelah was born as the third son to Judah and his Canaanite wife in Chezib.

5Then she bore still another son and named him Shelah. Judah was at Chezib when she gave birth to him.

Tamar Waits for Shelah

After Judah's two oldest sons died, Judah promised that Tamar would marry Shelah when he grew up, but Judah did not keep his promise.

11Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah is grown up." For he thought, "He may die too, like his brothers." So Tamar went and settled in her father's house.
14So she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself up, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, on the road to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah was grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
26Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.
