In John's Revelation (Rev 7:5–8), 12000 from each of the twelve tribes of Israel are sealed, totaling 144000. The number 12 symbolizes God's people (the twelve tribes and the twelve apostles), while 1000 reinforces the meaning of completeness and abundance. Thus, the combination 12000 expresses that God knows and preserves His people in their entirety, without anyone being lost. The sealing emphasizes God's sovereign protection over those He has chosen and points to a complete salvation encompassing all of God's people. In rabbinic tradition, the number 12 is closely linked to Israel's tribal structure and the divine ordering of the people. The combination with 1000 (Heb. 'elef') is understood as an expression of an innumerable multitude and divine perfection, so that 12000 denotes a complete and ordered quantity within each tribe. Many early church fathers, such as Victorinus of Pettau and Andreas of Caesarea, interpreted the 12000 from each tribe symbolically rather than literally—as an expression of the entire believing community rather than an exact count of individuals. The list of tribes in Rev 7:5–8 differs from the usual tribal lists in the OT: Dan is omitted and replaced by Manasseh, while Levi is included.
