Number of registered men in Reuben's camp
The number 150450 indicates the total count of men fit for war in Reuben's camp, as shown in the census of Numbers 2:16. Reuben's camp consisted of three tribes: Reuben (46500), Simeon (59300) and Gad (45650), and was positioned on the south side of the tabernacle. This camp was to break camp second in the marching order through the wilderness, after Judah's camp which led the way. The placement of Reuben to the south and as the second camp in line reflects Reuben's position as Jacob's firstborn who lost his birthright – Judah took over leadership. That God organized Israel's camp with such precision underscores His orderly nature and care for His people even during the wilderness journey. Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son with Leah (Gen 29:32), but he lost his birthright because of his sin against his father (Gen 35:22; 1 Chr 5:1). The fact that Reuben's camp does not lead the marching order, but follows behind Judah's camp, reflects this loss of the birthright. The three tribes in Reuben's camp – Reuben, Simeon, and Gad – were all connected to Leah's branch of Jacob's family. Reuben and Simeon were Leah's sons, while Gad was the son of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. In rabbinic tradition, the arrangement of the camps around the tabernacle has been compared to the angels' arrangement around God's throne, where each camp had its heavenly counterpart. According to Bamidbar Rabbah, Reuben's camp on the south side is linked to the archangel Uriel, although other traditions vary in assigning angels to the four sides of the camps.*
