In Revelation 9:16, John describes a gigantic cavalry army of 200 million released by the river Euphrates to kill one-third of humanity. John himself emphasizes that he heard the number—a phrasing suggesting the size is deliberate and significant. The number symbolizes an overwhelming, almost incomprehensible military force expressing God’s judgment in the last days. Some interpreters read the number literally as a future army, while others see it as a hyperbolic expression of a power so great that it is impossible for humans to resist. The Greek expression in the original text is 'δισμυριάδες μυριάδων' (dis myriades myriadōn), which means 'twice ten thousand times ten thousand'. The myriad (10,000) was the largest number concept in ancient Greek language, and a double myriad of myriads thus expresses an almost incomprehensible quantity. The river Euphrates held great symbolic and strategic significance in biblical tradition. It formed the northeastern boundary of the promised land (Gen 15:18) and was historically the border river between the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire. The fact that the army is released specifically at the Euphrates links it to ideas of invasion from the east—a threat well known in the ancient world.
