337500

Half of the livestock plunder from Midian belonging to the congregation

The number 337,500 appears in Numbers 31:43 as the congregation's share of the small livestock after the war against the Midianites. The total number of small livestock in the spoils of war was 675,000, and this was divided equally between the warriors who had taken part in the battle and the rest of Israel's congregation, just as the Lord had commanded Moses (Num 31:27). The congregation's half share of 337,500 small livestock illustrates an important principle in God's economy: even those who did not go out to fight were to have a part in the blessing. The distribution emphasizes that the victory belonged to the Lord and all the people, not only the soldiers. From the congregation's share, one out of every fifty was given as a tribute to the Levites who served at the tabernacle (Num 31:30), ensuring that God's servants were cared for through the offering of the entire community.

Historiskt

The war against Midian in Numbers 31 was fought as the Lord's vengeance for the role of the Midianites in leading Israel into idolatry at Baal-Peor (Num 25). The enormous dimensions of the plunder testify to Midian's wealth as traders.

Teologiskt

The distribution principle between warriors and the congregation (divided equally) is found again in David's decree in 1 Sam 30:24–25, where he established that those who guarded the equipment should share equally with those who fought. This became a fixed custom in Israel.

Rabbinskt

The tax distribution was twofold: the warriors gave one out of five hundred to the high priest, while the congregation gave one out of fifty to the Levites – a tenfold difference which likely reflects that the warriors had already risked their lives and therefore bore a lighter burden.
