The number of men fit for military service from the tribe of Dan in the first census in the wilderness (Num 1:39).
The number 62700 appears in Numbers 1:39 as the recorded count of fighting men from the tribe of Dan during the first census in the wilderness of Sinai. This census was carried out at the Lord's command in the second year after leaving Egypt, and included all men over twenty years old who were fit for battle. Dan was among the largest tribes in this count, reflecting the fulfillment of God's promise that the people of Israel would become numerous. In the second census, described in Numbers 26:43, the tribe of Dan had grown to 64,400 men, an increase showing the tribe's continued growth throughout the wilderness journey. Dan was the son of Jacob and Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant (Gen 30:5–6). Despite his status as the son of a maidservant, Dan's tribe became one of the most numerous among Israel's twelve tribes. In Jacob's blessing (Gen 49:16), it is said that "Dan shall judge his people", linking the tribal name to the Hebrew verb 'din' (דין) meaning to judge. When setting up camp in the wilderness, Dan's tribe was placed north of the tabernacle together with Asher and Naphtali, and they marched last during the journey (Num 2:25–31).*
