The lifespan of Enosh, son of Seth

In Genesis 5:11 it is stated that Enosh lived 905 years before he died. Enosh is the third generation after Adam, the son of Seth. He belongs to the early patriarchs who, according to the genealogy in Genesis 5, lived unusually long lives. In his time people began to call on the name of the Lord (Gen 4:26), which marks an important turning point in the biblical primeval history.

The name Enosh (אֱנוֹשׁ) means 'human' or 'mortal' in Hebrew, and highlights human frailty in contrast to God's eternity.

Rabbinskt

In rabbinic tradition there is disagreement about what it means that people began to 'call on the name of the Lord' in the time of Enosh (Gen 4:26). Rashi and Maimonides interpret this negatively, as the beginning of idolatry where people started to worship heavenly bodies and call them by God's name. Other rabbinic sources see it as the beginning of genuine worship of God.
