All Saints' Day
A memorial of all believers who have gone before. The hope of resurrection.

The great white multitude: "After this I saw a vast crowd that no one could count, from every nation and tribe and people and language. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes" (Rev 7:9-17). The Beatitudes: "Blessed are the poor in spirit... blessed are those who mourn... blessed are those persecuted for righteousness' sake" (Matt 5:1-12). Hebrews 12:1-2: "Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses." Jesus' promise: "Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die" (John 11:25-26).
Betydning
All Saints' Day celebrates not only famous saints but all believers—the unknown grandmother who prayed, the nameless martyr, anyone who lived by faith. Death is not the end; believers are "surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses." The day makes room for both grief and hope: the loss is real, but the hope of resurrection is stronger.

Liturgisk kontekst
White color. Celebrated on the first Sunday in November in the Lutheran tradition. In Norwegian tradition, it is also a memorial day for one's own deceased—candles are lit at graves. Combines festive saintly remembrance with personal grief and hope.
Historie
The celebration of all saints dates back to the 300s–400s, originally linked to martyr memorials. Pope Gregory III (731) consecrated a chapel to all saints on November 1. The Lutheran tradition kept the day but removed saint worship—the focus shifted to faith as an example and the hope of resurrection.
